Personally, my definition of a "free game" has always been that there's no content you MUST pay in order to obtain. To that end, I have no objection whatsoever to optional real-money grind alternatives. So long as you can still get everything without money, it's a free game.
That said, I think the cost of the starter packs should be based on what a 'professional grinder' (think jmdt) could make in an hour (in
, of course) with an upgraded deck. Then charge about $10 USD for that much
in card-value. That'll get you a significant boost over a newb grinding that hour with an unupgraded deck, so it'll be valuable for a new player. Of course, only unupgraded common cards should be available that way. Or, at most, one rare weapon per 'pack'.
It'd be kind of cool to be able to buy a pack that was half-constructed with the most often-played few cards from a single element and then the rest completely random.
