Rare Card 'Rebuilding' https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=38931.msg483837#msg483837
« on: April 19, 2012, 10:18:12 pm »
I got my first Earth nymph a while ago now, and, despite wanting a second, for someone like me it's very unlikely I'll ever even enter a tournament, never mind getting round to being good enough at the game and understand deckbuilding well enough to win one. This instantly rules out the only non-donation, non-luck based way of getting a nymph. Obviously, I believe that they should be rare cards, but I also feel as though right now they're mostly worthless as very few people have enough of the same one to use it in a valid deck.

I had this idea a while ago, after getting other nymphs I don't really want, a section of the bazaar where we could 'cash in' our rare cards for one of our choice, i.e in my case:

I hand over my water and darkness nymph, and in return I get back one nymph of choice.

I feel this still retains the rarity of the card whilst also giving those of us who want to use them a viable means of doing so. The idea could also be extended to weapons for a different reason, although they're more common, getting a 7th copy of a card is a bit upsetting, and having a reason to hold onto it so should I get an 8th I can get another weapon I want would feel a bit more practical than just selling it for around 150 coins.

Sorry if the first bit sounds like I'm just whinging about things, I think the tournaments were a great way of addressing part of the problem, just not one that particularly applies to someone like me. Please do let me know what you think as well, any improvements/suggestions/problems etc. would be welcome.

This here is one of zanz´s posts, which shows his opinion about nymphs a bit.
[...]
9. Wait, didn't I create the nymphs to add rare, unusual cards that will promote deck variety in the first place?

In fact... you might expect more nymph-like cards in the future, cards that will do something that is already in the game, but in a different way. My goal is to have people actually creating their very own deck instead of everyone playing with the very same deck. That means that there is a price to pay: the chance that you will never get to have a specific card -ever- because it simply is too rare.
Written with my own words: The developer doesn´t want you to get the nymph you want - except by luck. The nymphs you have shall make your account somehow "unique" and motivate you to make your own decks. The community needed good prices for PvP events, so some events have reward codes for nymphs/marks as a price.
About tournaments and nymphs - many veterans choose mark cards, not nymphs as a reward, because of rarity, and these cards show, that you have won a PvP event. There´s no other way to get mark cards. Not now.

P.S. Still waiting for my 2nd Earth Nymph. Grats to your nymph.  Chances are ~ 3 % per day to get a nymph.~ 60% to get an earth nymph in the next year. There´s hope.

well, if that happens, I hope zanz has a slightly different way of implementing how people get them.  I have nothing against making such cards to promote "account uniqueness," but in order to make those personal decks that zanz says is his goal, you usually need several copies of important cards.  (This touches on what the OP is talking about).

As it is now, nymphs are nothing more than trophies/collectibles/whatever.  Part of that is due to their numerous faults as competitive cards, but it is also as much due to the fact that people will rarely have the necessary number of a specific nymph to be able to make a viable deck using them.

Unless, by unique deck he means 'splash' a specific nymph into a deck by replacing a similar cost card or something, then he just needs to buff/adjust them so that their benefit/cost ratio is comparable to the card you would take out.

A trade in of 2 nymphs for one of your choice is a pretty good idea I think.

I'd love to see skill-based ways to obtain nymphs and marks beyond the weekly tournament, but every time I suggest it I get flamed straight to hell :p

I think the idea is to have he cards be sufficient to create novel decks that are played because the player has a sense of accomplishment rather than being OP. AKA decks made to celebrate a 2nd nymph. This added incentive also overcomes the inertial that cards have against replacement. This allows the Nymphs to have comprable cost/benefit ratios to the cards they replace.
