Little suggestion - mulligan rule https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=26479.msg336759#msg336759

Dunno if this idea could be good or not, but it sometimes happens to me that I poorly lose a game just because I don't have pillars in my first hand and I don't get any of them during the first turns, just to have them all in sequence in later turns (mostly too late). I think this is not because I've got few pillars in my deck, but just because sometimes card mixing doesn't work as we expect.

I used to play Magic the gathering a few years ago, and I remember that there was the same problem in that game. To solve the problem there was the "mulligan rule": if you don't have any land (= pillar) on your first hand you can choose to remix cards.

I honestly think that maybe the same rule could be applied here for Elements: if no pillars appear in the first hand of a game, two buttons could appear (just one time per game, maybe) and the player could choose to remix card or take them as they are and continue playing.

We have a mulligan. If you get no free cards in the opening hand, you get a redraw. You won't know if this happened.

Zanzarino has stated that he doesn't want the type of mulligan used in mtg, because it means both players need an extra turn before a match actually begins.

We already have an auto-mulligan, and giving a manual mulligan would make games (especially PvP) take longer.

Elements 1.21

Auto-mulligan function:

Q - How does it work?
A - If none of the cards in your initial hand can be played during the first turn (none has cost 0) you'll automatically get 7 new cards. Only once.

Q - Am I going to realize a "mulligan" happened?
A - No.

Q - Why can't I decide myself if I want a mulligan?
A1 - People would use it to drastically improve the chances of getting the desired card X in the initial hand.
A2 - It would force me to add an extra turn in pvp games before the game actually starts: more waiting, more questions, more clicking.
A3 - I still want bad/good initial hands in the game. What I do not want is having 8 cards in your hand and having to discard one during your first turn - just too frustrating.

Q - I think it should count the number of pillars instead of the number of cost 0 cards
A - There are pillar-less decks

Q - I strongly prefer the system where I can have a mulligan, but if I get one I'll get less cards and it can be repeated up to 3 times, unless it is a first Monday of the month in which case I can get 2/3 of the cards that my opponent had yesterday.
A - Simple = Better

Q - I played a game where I still could not play any card during my first turn
A - You might still draw 14 cards and no pillars - did you try adding pillars to your deck?
I'm doing science, and I'm still alive.

We've had a lot of old MtG-players wanting a manual mulligan (me included), but eventually I realised it's smoother with an automulligan in this game due to how unreliable the software is in PvP. It would cause even more drama regarding either player's chance at winning, and it would also make counters much, much more foolproof.

In something like War, that would almost completely remove any chance of winning against a counter and make it much less exciting for all parties. Absolutely, it would be more comfy for players, but very boring for spectators and I bet even players would get bored of that predictability. RNG, love it and hate it.

If things are like this I absolutely agree with the strategy of automulligan  ;D

My question raised because of a game I started with just a Nova in hand, which was free to play the first turn, but my deck had just 3 Nova and around 13 Pillars, so Nova was just a support card. The same thing I think could happen if, for example, I've got just a Photon in hand at first round... I don't think it's properly right to have a system like this, but I also have seen very strange decks around, with no pillars or with a photon-immolation philosophy, so maybe this is just the right way to let all types of deks exist.

I personally like very much this game and the way it's built, I believe Elements builders have already done all these discussion about this matter, so I'll just say I'll take it as is and just think of a deck that won't come in disadvantage because of this well thought automulligan method  ;)

Thank you very much for the answers!

Indeed, it does change deckbuilding, and pros have learnt to take advantage of it to the fullest. Bit awkward at first, but it does make the game even more unique in a way.

While  I support manual mulligans on the fact that auto mulligan makes so many decks work a lot less no one else really cares and zanz loves rng so it's pointless to argue for. The people that would leave due to "more predictability" that manual mulls cause would be nearly equal to the people that leave due to rng. Anyway lrn2search the forum. there have been mull threads many a time in the past.
