i am aware that the two shards are predisposed to upgrade into different ones, and i assume that is what is going on in this picture, its still really annoying/frustrating to look at.

Ouch. Maybe if one had the shard pointing left and the other pointing right everything would work out.

They added a little symbol in the bottom left of each card in the slot wheel in v1.17 to get rid of the confusion over the upgraded/un-upgraded cards.

Except here unupgraded shards look the same, hence my suggestion in the second post.
