Title: Adding more theme / interest to reverse time | rewind
Post by: SteppingStone81 on November 09, 2010, 10:12:23 pm
Currently, reverse time|rewind causes a mummy|elite mummy to turn into a pharaoh|elite pharaoh.

This got me thinking ... shouldn't reverse time|rewind have special interactions with some other creatures (especially death creatures)?  The goal here is not to buff / nerf reverse time|rewind, but rather to add some theme and interest.

Here are a few possibilities (I would love to hear more suggestions):

Initial creatureAfter reverse time|rewind
skeleton|elite skeletonSomething living, maybe graviton merc?
bone dragon|ivory dragonemerald dragon|jade dragon
shrieker|elite shriekergraboid|elite graboid
any nymphfate egg|elite fate egg

If you are going to be doing that with reverse time then there are so many other cards that you would have to do that with to in order to stay fair. Freeze on a lavagolem for instance, turn it into a plain rock golem.

Although having so many cool unique interactions would be fun.

I have many ideas for this and other cards... That is a lot of extra "Hidden" effects though and people are pretty evenly divided between "hidden effects are fine, keep adding them" and "stop adding hidden effects, it's too confusing"

As long as they are logical, I think its fine. Just as long as we know that there are in fact hidden effects based on logical cause and effect.

This idea is pure genius.
I love adding extra thought into the game, and this makes sense, and is just plan cool.
However, it could end up as a nerf to reverse time/rewind, unless you use it in combination with other things.

I dislike the idea of shrieker turning back into graboid though, that although logical would remove one of the downfalls of graboid evolution, causing them to play  :time rather than 8 :earth.
Skeleton + Reverse time to something living is great though.
Nymph -> Fate Egg also seems pretty strong, since they can never get that nymph back.
Ash Eater -> Ash = Win. (maybe it should turn into the upped counterpart, and Brimstone eater turns to the upped)

I love these ideas. A little more thought, just to keep the games interesting, and separate the good players from the grindy ones.

skeleton|elite skeleton   Something living, maybe graviton merc?

Works

bone dragon|ivory dragon   emerald dragon|jade dragon

Works

shrieker|elite shrieker   graboid|elite graboid

works
any nymph   fate egg|elite fate egg

Makes no sense. That only works if you assume nymphs are born from a fate egg naturally.

Ash Eater -> Ash = Win. (maybe it should turn into the upped counterpart, and Brimstone eater turns to the upped)

Not logical, that only works if they are born directly from ash.

But the ash was once inside the ash eater. In essence, the ash became the ash eater, as it could not survive without some food in its system. Elements never had to be logical. I just wanted some more use for this unupped card, and saw a small link in the names.

More passive abilities, only triggered by other cards is what we need in the game, until you have to think about every move you make.

In relation to this thread, I have thought for sometime that other cards should have alternate effects on special creatures.

For example you play "Anubis". Then you play blood basilisk on "Anubis" and instead of anubis getting +20hp and 6 turn time bubble, anubis turns into a new card "Stone Guardian (or something). Stone guardian would be an earth card and a permanent (maybe with the ability to cast immortality still... or otherwise some new ability)

I think this concept could work for a lot of different spells. Below are some ideas.

-Antimatter - Antimatter and gravity pull on same creature turns that creature into a nova
-Plague (not really sure if/what...)
-Aflatoxin (not really sure if/what)
-Gravity Pull - Antimatter and gravity pull on same creature turns that creature into a nova
-Blood Basilisk - As described above
-Rage Potion - if played on spark it turns into firespirit
-Freeze - A card in the armory already has a mechanic using this, (Water Golem | Ice golem)
-Thunderstorm - Steam Machine gains a charge / Metallic creatures (armagio or new card) have their skill change to lightening for one use
-Reverse Time - mummy, future cards maybe
-Liquid Shadow - light creatures are transformed into darkness creatures
-Lightening - same as thunderstorm

That makes no freakin' sense in the contect of time and you need it to be logical for hidden abilities to work. Otherwise no matter who you use it on, the otyugh would become whatever it just ate, the dragons would become cows and peasants, what they ate really doesn't matter.

Now reverse time on Phoenix would turn it into an ash and ash into a phoenix. And reverse time on chimera would just cause all the creatures to unseperate.

I definitely take this as a valid critique of my initial suggestion.  "Hidden" effects are probably a bit difficult to keep track of - in coding, design, and play.  Nevertheless, the added oomph these little extras would add to the feel and theme of the game might make them worth it.  I started with reverse time since that has already been implemented for mummy --> pharaoh.

This is a pretty cool idea; definitely thematic, although one would need first to develop the new card.

Interesting idea, although possibly complicated to implement ... also, it might turn into a black hole?  I don't know enough elements-physics.

I like these along the theme of cards turning into other cards based on specific spells.

-Liquid Shadow - light creatures are transformed into darkness creatures
One would need a map from light to dark creatures, e.g., golden dragon --> black dragon, pegasus --> vampire, angel --> gargoyle, but also an idea that could add theme and interest.

Look, I'm not going to get into an argument about whether or not it makes sense.
A thread like this is pretty wide open in terms of how you can respond to it, and I was just throwing in an idea, and as I said before "Elements never had to be logical. I just wanted some more use for this unupped card, and saw a small link in the names"

If we are thinking about alternate uses for card ideas, lightning could add 5/0 to an electric like creature, with it going to 3/0 next turn, then finally 1/0 (if we include steam machine-armagio) or just add 5/0 if it is only for spark (needs a 3 card combo to work to its full potential). Also serves as a way to avoid reflective shields. This does not necessarily make sense either [prevents critism based on logic]

There is no other aspect outside of the logic of the suggestion in which to give an opinion on.

Actually that is a good idea too. I just like the idea of antimatter and gravity pull (matter) creating something. Maybe a nova and a blackhole? Or maybe just neutralizing eachother...

There is no other aspect outside of the logic of the suggestion in which to give an opinion on.
Game Balance, Creativity, Originality, Useablilty ect.
Whether it can inspire other, better ideas- since these are unlikely to be implemented in the game anyway.

Shrieker + Reverse Time --> Graboid
Logic: Yes
Balance: No
Original: No
Usable: At the cost of overpoweredness
Inspiring: Really?

I love the idea in general, but shrieker should be an exception for obvious reasons
Unless we are only judging on logic, and then it would be perfect.

Edit: Seems a bit of a negative post, I'll agree with the idea that AM + BH should be either a black hole or supernova, either one I am fine with, however, you would have to think on who it would effect (caster of the spell, or side which the creature is on). Since they are both spells, they are both balanced enough, and would require a two card combo, so it just makes sure you are always being attentive, and understanding of the game.

I had pretty similar idea a while ago and I made new card suggestion based on it:
Dragon Egg | Ancient Dragon Egg (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,12853.0.html) Maybe that inspires you further with this idea of yours.

PS. If you like my card, you can vote it on Crucible - Other Card Ideas (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,5517.0.html)

Yes there are lots of nice flavorful interactions.

The problem is that incorporating all that into the game, RT would basically lose its function as a CC card.
Same is true for Freeze etc.
