Another difference between uploaded at linked avatars is that linked ones are always scaled to 128x128, whereas uploaded ones keep their size and proportions if it's no bigger than that.
Not sure if that's intended, or how bigger uploaded avatars behave.

it's off the internet so no you don't get to upload them and some modifications were done by SG so it fits into the box with good scaling. If you want a custom avatar then all you need to do is upload a picture you made to an image hosting website.
