I did some cleaning in the "Religion" section of "Off-Topic Discussion" https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=2447.msg19803#msg19803
« on: January 25, 2010, 12:58:56 pm »
Due to complaints, I have removed a couple of threads in the "Religion" section.

I was really hoping that I wouldn't have had to resort to this (freedom speech and all) but I there are so many other more important things that I just don't have the time to deal with this now. Deleting is easier/faster so that's what I did.

In the future I hope everyone understands what "off-topic" means. We should be able to discuss about anything, that's why it's called "off-topic". Topics don't have to be Elements or gaming related.

Also I hope everyone understands that the views expressed in this forum are the personal views of people in question and do not represent the views of this forum. To make it more clear, if a member of our staff says on an Off-Topic forum that he/she worships the Three Headed Monkey, that does not mean this forum is about Three Headed Monkeys.

One last tip. If you get easily offended and don't like some topics like religion or politics, the solution is an easy one: do not go to that particular section of the forums! Nobody here is forcing you to read those threads and you can easily avoid them.

I'm a big believer in freedom of speech so those threads might come back some day. But for now they are gone and everyone can sleep peacefully tonight.

Just the usual complaints when it comes to religious discussion because religion is considered "off limits" by some people who think religion should not be discussed on an open forum.

Hopefully at some point there will be true freedom of speech where a few individuals don't decide what others can and can't talk about. Unfortunately that won't happen in our lifetime.

I've never seen a 'Religious' sub-section on any forum that actually worked well. Usually, it's best left to websites that handle only religion, due to the biased nature of such sites.
So long and thanks for all the fish!

Same. On every single other forum I visit, you can get modded for posting about religion or in some cases even referencing it.

If we can have civilized discussions about religion, great, but they commonly devolve into flame wars about other's beliefs so most places don't allow it.

Is there freedom of speech on the internet? I was under the impression that there wasn't, and that we Americans just assume there is.

There is no freedom of speech on the internet in the same way that there is no freedom of speech in an office environment.  Every website is owned by someone, and that person has the right to moderate how you speak in his or her space.
If something happens and you think it deserves my attention, feel free to PM me. Other than that, I'm probably here if you want to shoot the breeze.

Of course there is freedom of speech on the internet. However, that freedom of speech goes both ways. I can just as much say sheep are purple as much as I can Satan isn't real.

Like stated above, each site is governed by someone (or group of someones) and they are free to reign over their own little domain how they see fit. Of course, some areas of rule are governed by even larger tyrants, i.e. several countries without the freedom of speech. Therefor limiting what the smaller domain can and cannot say.

But 'tis a sad thing when religion talk has to be restricted some due to certain people taking offense. Much like SG said, don't like it? Stay the hell off of it. No one is forcing anyone to go to any section. At least it seemed to be decent here. I've seen some forums erupt in flames or an internet hell because of just a few religious posts.
