Giving the community custom codes https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=7674.msg85703#msg85703

First of all this has nothing to do with Elements the game reward codes. Anyone not interested in coding (with a computer), can skip this announcement.

This is something I feel I need to discuss about now that a lot of people are interested in producing custom code and scripts to be used in Elements community events and competitions, or the forum itself.

Rule of thumb:
If you want to give custom code to be used in Elements community forums or events, you need to give us the source.

This is not because we want to steal the code. I would never let anything like that happen. It's simply to ensure that once made "official", the system won't suddenly disappear leaving us with nothing. We've had a lot of people just disappear, never to be seen again, and I've personally wasted tons of time because of this.

There are two main options here:

Option 1 - Keeping the code to yourself   BAD
You make some custom code and maybe start your own website using that code. You want to keep full control to yourself, and you don't want to give the source to us. If you some day decide to abandon the project and delete everything, we are left with nothing. You have full control, we have zero control.

Option 2 - Donating the code to us   GOOD
You make the custom code and donate it to us for free. We will put the custom code on our server, and you will naturally be given all credit. We are not going to use any part of that code to anything else than what you provided to us.

If I have options, I will always go with option 2 because it's a more safe solution. This is the internet and I don't know any of the community members in real life. If I went with option 1, they could some day decide to quit and I could do nothing about it but to start from scratch again, wasting huge amounts of time.

Lets take Planplans deck image builder code as an example of option 2 and how it should be done. He made the code, gave it to us, and even made a short tutorial on how to implement it. That's exactly what we are looking for. If Planplan gets eaten by a bear tomorrow, his deck image builder would still be available to us.

I guess the main question here is whether you want to keep the code to yourself or donate it. So before you start a big coding project to help the community, please make sure that you are ok with option 2 because otherwise it's very unlikely that your code will ever be implemented.

Related to this, I'm thinking about starting a forum section (or a sticky thread at least) that would list all kinds of cool projects community members could be a part of. I know there are a lot of coders out there who would like to help make things run more smoothly, or give us new cool things to play around with. More information about that later.

Thanks for reading.

Will do once I get the computer with my project on it working again. Both because it's better for you and because I don't know which site I would be able to upload it to anyway :).

Are you suggesting something might happen?

Btw how is that project going? It has the potential to be something awesome. I love the idea of having software that tells you if your deck sucks :)

Lol, yeah thanks.

Actually Planplan specifically said that he was not being eaten by bears. He's busy with real life like work and such at the moment but I'm sure he will make a glorious comeback at some point.

Um, stalled. To say the least.

The computer with my java programming stuff on it is having trouble with internet and crashes at the moment, so I can't really do anything on it. I don't know when it's getting it fixed, but when it does, I'll get to working on it again (I could probably have it done in a week once the computer is fixed).

Then the long debugging starts  ^-^ .

EDIT:
Just to actually tell you what I have done:
-Is the deck too large or too small?
-What type of deck is it?
-Is the deck good at what it's made for?
-And at least two other things; I haven't looked at it in awhile and can't exactly remember >_>.
-Aether cards/codes are linked.
-Time cards/codes will be linked (just have to copy-paste what's in that topic).
-Beta version of the GUI.

Still need to do:
-More things for deck feedback <- will be ongoing even after beta is released.
-Link the rest of the cards and codes.
-Fix the GUI (it's acting strangely right now, from what I remember).
-Add in actual feedback to the GUI based on what the methods return.

I'm an Open Source developer, so I'll probably release smaller projects like Deck Killer into Public Domain, while larger projects will be at GNU/GPL probably.

When I remember, I put source code inside archive files I post here, but if I forget for some reason, just remind me ;)

Sounds great.

That deck killer will most definitely be useful in some future event or competition.

Watch out for those bears, Scaredgirl.  If you were eaten up we'd all be lost.

I'd say the bear/raptor/otyugh/whatever-that-ate-her would be lost. She has malignant cells in her sunglasses, that says something.

I guess she has some kind of powerful aflatoxin that allows her to take control of the body and mind of anything that eats her. Just watch out, or one day we'll see her avatar change into a bear in sunglasses ;)

er... i dont even know how to code things like that, i figured you already had that option when this forum was put up. you said something about having forum options and such already in place, as though there was a forum template that you were able to go off of. i find it kind of interesting that this template didnt include profile codes

Luckily, I'm too old for pedobear.  ;)

I'm always around, but it's harder to come since my network administrator performed some network stats...  :-[

On a side note, I want to keep my source a bit for the card generator, only because I'm using it to learn the language. But when I think I learned almost everithing I could from it alone, I'll release everything, and wish people that know AS3 will help make it more consistent.

It's nice to see you're still working on your project Puppy, I'm waiting for it :)
