Yeah, but they're fun :) And I suppose that 'Image wars' is the most space-consuming thread.
Those images are not really a problem. Especially since they are usually linked, not uploaded as attachments.

The problem is the php scripts that work on the background. But we can minimize the problem if we minimize the spam.

Lets do this:

Someone (or multiple people together) write some rules regarding the forum games. For example it could be titled: "READ THIS BEFORE PARTICIPATING IN FORUM GAMES".

Rules could be for example.. "you can post on a specific thread again only after 5 other members have posted on it". Feel free to use better English than me. You can also come up with some other rules if you want.

I will then sticky that thread and re-open "Forum Games".

If everyone follows the rules, we won't have any problems. If rules are not being followed, asses will be kicked and forum sections will be taken down.

How's that?

So why does this forum have trouble while all the other forums I've seen have no trouble?

"There were actually more posts written there then on all other sections combined."

...

EPIC. :D

Scaredgirl, your compromise is fine. If it is needed, I'll take down Image Wars, even though it is wildly hilarious, popular, and seems not to be causing a lot of trouble.

Your rule will also help bump me and Kamietsu as the top posters by far in that section :D

Making the subsection read-only was a neccesary precaution, but I don't like it because I'm going to lose in Tag very soon! http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=2649.0 (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=2649.0)

I don't know what other forums you are talking about so it's difficult to say. If you are talking about large forums, they probably use expensive dedicated servers. We have been using shared servers and VPS.

Also most forums don't have many modifications. We have 40+. That means we need use much more php scripts which eats up server CPU.

The reality is that our community had grown and we needed a better server.  There's nothing mysterious about that and it happens all the time. If you have a website about your cat, it's very easy to keep it up 24/7. Forums are much more complex and require much more resources.

1. You cannot take it down :)

2. Even if you could, there's no reason for it because "Forum Games" will be back very shortly. They could even be back without any restrictions now that we have more resources. We'll see.

I picked the perfect time for you, didn't I Icy? ;) XD I'm going to end up ruling that game >.>

Anyway, I hope everything works out with the forum fine. It would be a shame to have to lose forum games.

Can't you deactivate all that scripts for the forum games?

Nope.

But what I can do is that I can make Forum Games fully functional again, and that's what I did. Feel free to post there but try not to post 100 times a day. :)

I will monitor the CPU usage and we'll see if Forum Games eats too much resources.

Have fun.
