Since Essence decided to do a multi-step puzzle, I think I will too.

all of the letters that went into blanks should be added to these letters. Anagram them for the next step:

and then do a first and last with the fifth and fourth letters of that answer. So if the answer for the first part were flank (which it isn't) then you would have to anagram flnicoo. And if the answer to the second part were rustler (which again, it isn't, just an example) then you would do a first and last with LT.
Every answer, even the intermediate ones, have to do with elements. However, only the "first and last" puzzle gives credit
