The culprit locked the door.

The culprit would not lock the door from the outside.
It just doesnt make sense. The following things have to happen: Someone gets in (this one is easy, they were let in by colleage) . They cause colleages death through physical damage and create a mess (sure). Colleage dies with them inside (could technically be someone else or more than one, but given he died immediately and no accomplices. ..). Culprit and key are inside, colleage dead. Door needs to be locked after culprit gets out,  culprit cannot lock door while outside and noone can knowingly help them. Basically the door needs to be locked by someone else, who has no intention of covering up a crime.
Things that arent ruled out: -Automatic locking.
Someone else finding the key sticking on the outside, turning it and throwing it in the room through gap under door. 
The door locks automatically upon closing or after some time.

The culprit left the key in the outside keyhole. Someone found it, thinking they do a good thing they locked the door and slid the key into the room through the gap under the  door

The door can only be locked with a key, and only while it is closed.

No more than one person was involved in the victim's death. This includes changing the crime scene before the staff unlocked the door.

I like this breakdown, but it misinterprets one of the Red Truths. Not telling which though. There are many now.
