"Nice and cool, these mountains are," Singed told Shadow, "which means we aren't the only things that wil enjoy it. Alert" Shadow immidiately became more wary. "Now, let's go see what these pretty hills have stored for us." So Singed and Shadow traveled through Ered Gorgoth, which were neither pretty nor small. Though, unbeknownst to them, they were being watched both by the eagle King Turgon had spying on them and the surviving kin of Ungoliant.
They were few, but they were powerful, since Ungoliant was always hungry and would eat anything, so they had to be to survive harsh conitions. Do to this, they were also scatterred, so there was only one to assault Singed and Shadow. "Free food wondering in my land?" The monstrous spider asked itself, "and with a decent sized pack too! I wonder what treasures it holds!" So the evil thing stalked Singed for the rest of the day, waiting t ambush him while he slept.
"So, the little goblin has already found an admirer," the scout mused to himself, "this could be an interesting battle, and the King will be rid of a pest no matter the outcome" So the scout sent a nearby eagle to relay the news to King Turgon.
"Remember Shadow, howl if anything comes near camp," Singed reminded Shadow, " and I promise I'll return the favor." For all of his appearing casual and unwary, he had noticed both of his watchers. Though he wasn't aware that it was a great eagle following him, he had assumed it was a familiar. So he went to sleep, trusting Shadow's greater senses to alert him of trouble. He wasn't asleep long when he heard the familiar howl, to others, it would sound like a wolf howling at the moon. "Good, it didn't wait until I was asleep anyway," he grumbled to himself as he got up, he didn't have to put his gear back on, since he never took it off. "Silent," he commanded Shadow, "come and get my sword in your gut, now dont skulk around the shadows. I want to get back to my beauty sleep!"
"Oh, so you are alert," the giant spider said, "oh well, now you will just die tired." The monstrosity leaped at Singed, hoping to overwhelm him, what it failed to notice was Shadow, who promptly jumped on the spiders back and gained a power grip with his jaws. "Ah! Stupid mutt, I'll eat you alive!" the spider screamed.
Singed didn't even bother telling Shadow good job, he was already on the attack, before the spider knew it, it had lost a leg. "Who did you say was going to die again?" Singed snarled at the spider as he slashed at its eyes.
"Argh!!!" I'm going to kill you both slowly!" the spider cried, "now stand still! I don't like my supper to fight back, having to kill you the hard way makes your meat tough!"
Singed laughed, "Like I survived Dagor Bragollach just to be killed by a fat spider." The spider lunged and he caught it's fangs on his shield. Then he swung his sword in an overhand cut, the spider followed the sword and went to block it with its clawed foot, but it was a feint, Singed suddenly stepped forward and stabbed the spider with his shield, scoring two modest gouges in its hide. The spider finally flung Shadow off, though he changed strategy and starting biting at its hind legs when the spider attacked Singed, retreating as soon as he got its attention. Singed hadn't even been scratched so far, "Hahaha, you haven't even scratched me, and your missing a leg!" he jeered. The spider, wounded and enraged, charged Singed. Singed, ofcourse, expected this, and dived toward the spider when it got near, completely confusing his enemy. Singed knew what he was doing though, he was now under the spider and its belly was vulnerable. So he stabbed upward with both shield and sword, scoring solid hits with both. The spider started to twitch, and Singed dived out from under the spider as it collapsed. "Good job Shadow, you've earned all that meat that I thought i might have wasted on you."
The scout watched the goblin pack up and move camp farther away from the spider's corpse. "Now that's not something you see every day, a goblin that will face a monster on its own, time to report to King Turgon," the scout muttered to itself. A few hours later, the scout finished his report to King Turgon, "Indeed that is odd, though I'm not sure if we should be thankful, a goblin that can kill one of those monsters is not something I want roaming the land," King Turgon told the eagle scout, "I heard Finrod is coming north to Angband, send a messenger to tell him he may wish to catch or kill this paticular goblin before he becomes a threat."
