Prisoner's Dilemma by Xenocidius https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=31077.msg394303#msg394303

The original Prisoner's Dilemma:

Two men are arrested, but the police do not possess enough information for an arrest. Following the separation of the two men, the police offer both a similar deal- if one testifies against his partner (defects), and the other stays quiet (cooperates), the betrayer goes free and the cooperator receives the full one-year sentence. If both remain silent, both are sentenced to only one month in jail for a minor charge. If each 'rats out' the other, each receives a three-month sentence. Each prisoner must choose to either betray or remain silent; the decision of each is kept quiet. What should they do?
Sign-ups:

16 players can sign up. They are then matched up with each other randomly.

Rules:

A match is composed of a random amount of rounds. Each round lasts 3 days. During this round a player may "betray" the other by sending a PM to the host, or cooperate by not sending one.
If one player betrays the other, the one who betrayed gains 5 points. The other gains nothing. If both players cooperate they each gain 3 points. If both players betray each other they each gain 1 point.
At the end of the match half the players (the ones with the highest amount of points) progress to the next match; the others are eliminated (locked up, if you like). Previous points do not carry over.

In the first match there are 16 players; the top 8 players will progress. In the second match there are 8 players; the top 4 will progress. In the final match there are 4 players. The player who gains the highest amount of points in that match is the winner.

The winner at the end of the event is crowned a free man.

I'll also be adding some commentary each round starting now to enhance the game.

Rutarete and RootRanger have betrayed each other again; they may have to cooperate some more if they want to stay in the game! Legit, who has so far betrayed every round with no resistance, was no doubt quite surprised at his opponent's sudden rebuttal. Calindu221 has decided to stir things up a bit, and Jocko and Malignant have unexpectedly cooperated.

    Match 2: Round 3

Round 3 has ended! Players who betrayed are in red.

    1. Rutarete, RootRanger
    2. Fluffy Ninja, calindu221
    3. Legit, PlayerOa
    4. Jocko, Malignant

    Scores are as follows:

    PlayerScore
    calindu22111
    Malignant9
    Legit7
    RootRanger7
    Fluffy Ninja6
    Jocko4
    PlayerOa2
    Rutarete2
Looks like Rutarete wants to form an alliance, but RootRanger won't have that. Calindu221 has gone back to peacemaking, with Fluffy Ninja happily cooperating. Legit has predictably betrayed yet again and is starting to be punished for it; he and his partner are not going to last very long if they keep this up. Malignant has gone malignant, casually tossing aside Jocko's trust and brutally betraying him.

    Match 2: Round 4

Round 4 has ended! Players who betrayed are in red.

    1. Rutarete, RootRanger
    2. Fluffy Ninja, calindu221
    3. Legit, PlayerOa
    4. Jocko, Malignant

    Scores are as follows:

    PlayerScore
    calindu22114
    Legit12
    Malignant10
    Fluffy Ninja9
    RootRanger8
    Jocko5
    Rutarete3
    PlayerOa2
With RootRanger having rejected Rutarete's alliance they are now once again at war with each other. Fluffy Ninja and calindu221 are continuing their fluffy little peace treaty. Legit may be unwilling to let PlayerOa progress, but he's being dragged down as well. Jocko isn't happy about Malignant's previous betrayal, but Malignant continues to be malignant.

    Match 2: Round 5

Round 5 has ended! Players who betrayed are in red.

    1. Rutarete, RootRanger
    2. Fluffy Ninja, calindu221
    3. Legit, PlayerOa
    4. Jocko, Malignant

    Scores are as follows:

    PlayerScore

    Malignant11
    RootRanger9
    Jocko6
    Rutarete4
    PlayerOa2
It seems the last round just got hit by Parallel Universe; exactly the same results this round. Funnily enough, Fluffy Ninja and calindu221 are quite high on the scoreboard, having cooperated quite a lot. And yet those other evil people continue to betray. The mind game aspect of it is really coming out.

You have 2 days in which you can either PM me or stay silent.

    Match 2: Round 6

Round 6 has ended! Players who betrayed are in red.

    1. Rutarete, RootRanger
    2. Fluffy Ninja, calindu221
    3. Legit, PlayerOa
    4. Jocko, Malignant

    Scores are as follows:

    Legit18
    Fluffy Ninja12
    Jocko11
    Malignant11
    RootRanger9
    Rutarete7
    PlayerOa3
Calindu221 has decided to break the peace treaty! Rutarete and RootRanger have finally stopped betraying each other and may just survive. PlayerOa anticipates Legit's betrayal, and Legit doesn't disappoint. Funnily enough, I cancelled Malignant's betrayal on his request because Jocko "wanted to form a treaty" with him. The devious bastard!

    Match 2: Round 7

Round 7 has ended! Players who betrayed are in red.

    1. Rutarete, RootRanger
    2. Fluffy Ninja, calindu221
    3. Legit, PlayerOa
    4. Jocko, Malignant

    Scores are as follows:

    Legit21

    Jocko11
    RootRanger10
    Rutarete8
    PlayerOa6
Rutarete and RootRanger have turned against each other for a final time, and it has proved fatal for both of them! Calindu221 seems content with not betraying at the top of the scoreboard. Legit has for the first time cooperated with his partner. Malignant has carelessly betrayed Jocko, sending him to be locked up!

    1. calindu221, Malignant
    2. Fluffy Ninja, Legit

    Match 3: Round 1

Round 7 has ended! Players who betrayed are in red.

    1. calindu221, Malignant
    2. Fluffy Ninja, Legit

    Scores are as follows:

    PlayerScore
    Legit5
    Malignant5
    calindu2210
    Fluffy Ninja0
It seems Legit has gone back to betraying. Perhaps that single non-betrayal wasn't legit. Malignant is a malignant prisoner, casually giving himself a head-start over the top-scorer of the previous match.

    Match 3: Round 2

Round 2 has ended! Players who betrayed are in red.

    1. calindu221, Malignant
    2. Fluffy Ninja, Legit

    Scores are as follows:

    PlayerScore
    Legit10
    Malignant6
    calindu2211
    Fluffy Ninja0
Legit's betrayal is Legit. Fluffy Ninja must be sticking to his honor code. Calindu221 is enraged at Malignant's betrayal, and it looks like they're going to have to sort things out to keep up.

    Match 3: Round 3

Round 3 has ended! Players who betrayed are in red.

    1. calindu221, Malignant
    2. Fluffy Ninja, Legit

    Scores are as follows:

    PlayerScore
    Legit13
    Malignant11
    Fluffy Ninja3
    calindu2211
Legit has finally decided to cooperate; now that's legit! Malignant is the only betrayer of this round, and he could be on his way to freedom.

    Match 3: Round 4

Round 4 has ended! Players who betrayed are in red.

    1. calindu221, Malignant
    2. Fluffy Ninja, Legit

    Scores are as follows:

    PlayerScore
    Legit18
    Malignant16
    Fluffy Ninja3
    calindu2211
With last round's cooperation yielding no fruit, Legit has turned once again to the ways of the traitor. Malignant is mercilessly destroying calindu221's faith.

    Match 3: Round 5

Round 5 has ended! Players who betrayed are in red.

    1. calindu221, Malignant
    2. Fluffy Ninja, Legit

    Scores are as follows:

    PlayerScore
    Legit23
    Malignant21
    Fluffy Ninja3
    calindu2211
    Now that's legit!

Sorry for the late post, everyone. My Internet disintegrated.

It's been a great game, and we witnessed some of the fascinating phenomena associated with the Prisoner's Dilemma (such as Fluffy Ninja progressing to the final round despite not doing ANYTHING for the WHOLE GAME; now that's amazing!).

    GAME HAS ENDED

    WINNER: LEGIT

IMO it's a flawed game. GRAFD is similar, but in GRAFD you could counter everything.
But in this game, the winner is going to be whoever had their opponents betray them the least.

And for this reason, I'm entering. It's ridiculously easy to troll this event; how could I pass it up?

The OP needs updating; I realized how lacking in strategy it was. I believe there will be a lot more strategy involved with the new rules. Edit: Updated.

Though it is possible to troll the event it would be inadvisable (and you would most likely only be able to do it once, as you would be locked up afterwards).
