I'm ok with making changes that improve the game. Coming up with a ruleset that is original, fun, and balanced is difficult. If votes count in the thread but are trumped by PM votes, that is functionally the same as the rule before. The only difference is it will require slightly less effort on the part of the players.

For that reason, I'm going to allow it. Voting in the thread now counts, but you can fake that vote by PMing me your real vote.

Not sure how this benefits mafia in any way, though I could be missing something.

They could vote on someone who is confirmed mafia, and then vote on someone else via PM. It essentially allows every  player the option to bold face lie to everyone, without consequence

Yeah, but voting in thread before the rule change means nothing. It may as well not even be posted, now at least there is a guise of "but see I voted for them here!" It adds a kernel of believe-ability  to a defense, that would otherwise empty without votes.

I can see that, I guess. My advice would just be to not take anyone's word based on their vote. Don't give any credibility whatsoever based on voting done in the thread, as far as leaning town, anyway.
