I was thinking more on the lines of a random vote, because that can't be manipulated.

That percentage is based purely off RNG. The actual numbers of hitting a mafia is around 5%, and that is only there since they may make a massive scum slip.

Now if you were mafia, and attention was directed towards you, would you not try to stir something up? Would you not try to direct attention away from yourself? More often than not, this is what would happen if a mafia were to be in danger of being lynched day 1. If someone can detect a mafia doing this, this is where the 5% chance comes in. So ultimately, there is a 23% chance that mafia will control the first 2 kills, compared to a 100% chance of them controlling the 1st kill, if we were to abstain.

I'm not saying we should give up all discussions, I would want to suggest the opposite, but there is a better way to go about it.

A random vote gives much less a chance of finding a mafia, since a mafia can gang up on someone and say "I am just saving myself," like any normal civ would do.

eh? a random vote can't be argued with, whereas a normal vote could be a mafia starting it. So long as the RNG can be proved with witnesses in chat or something, then if anyone suddenly said they wanted to change it that would be very suspicious.

As always, voting against an RNG vote. As dawn stated, a mafia will just save himself, and if we force the RNG vote to go through whatever comes, we can just as well kill a useful role, and are still much more likely to hurt ourself. Not to mention that the person to be targetted dies for nothing and the game goes by RNG instead of skill or anything the like, which hurts the fun and is against the spirit of mafia.

I am playing mafia here only since 50, but everytime a Day1-Lynch happened, it hurt town. Other people with more experience may collect their experience here, if they want.

Another thing I am more favouring is voting on players who don't say much, to push activity and prevent mafia from simply hiding as long as they aren't targetted (by roles or votes). At the moment, we cannot really state who is talking actively or not, though.

I completely agree with this. I think it was dd who said a few mafias ago that most other websites expressly forbid doing a dice roll to determine who to lynch. It takes away the fun of the game. Do a random vote, sure, but let us figure out if we think you are mafia pushing forward a suggestion or a civvy who legitimately did an unwitnessed dice roll.

That said, I agree with no-lynch for all the reasons status thus far. I feel like more experienced mafia players have told me no-lynch isn't good day 1, but I've never heard an argument that convinced me. So:

What I am pleased about is that forcing this discussion rather than blindly going 'no-lynch' is forcing some discussion. The other, non statistic reason I don't like no lynch day 1.

I do get the argument against public RNG lynch though, so i need to decide whether to vote on the people I have seen as most suspicious so far, or to vote on one of the least talkative people so far. I am going to do the latter for now, in the hope that they start talking. Vote very liable to change, and I still might change to No-Lynch closer to the deadline, but I want more discussion first.

Does a no lynch vote have any power? AKA. If there are more votes on No lynch than on any other people, is the lynch cancelled? To me, no lynch means the same as not posting anything, it's just for letting the others know that you are not inactive, you just don't want to lynch anyone specific.

Meanwhile, I developed a new RQS system, which might even work. Each day, someone should pick 2 people from the signup list. Ask them a RELEVANT question, then interrogate them.
