How to Play
:
Mafia is played between two teams: the mafia and the civilians. The mafia win by killing all of the civilians, while the civilians win by killing all of the mafia members. There are more civilians than mafia members, but the mafia members all know the identities of each other.
The game alternates between a “night” phase and a “day” phase. During the night, the mafia may “night kill” one civilian by sending a private message to the host. The following day, the “town” (consisting of the civilians, as well as the mafia members pretending to be civilians) will vote to “lynch” one player, typically whoever they suspect to be a mafia member.
Additionally, players have “roles” to help them win. Each role corresponds to an ability, which may be activated during the night phase by sending a private message to the host. Every player has a “secondary role,” which is independent of the player’s allegiance (civilian or mafia). Some of the players have a “primary role,” which is specific to a particular allegiance. The rest of the players are vanilla civilians, who do not have a primary role.

- Players are not allowed to post or communicate about mafia if they have died.
- Players are not allowed to edit their posts. They should instead double-post.
- Players are not allowed to directly quote messages from the host. This rule is to prevent players from “proving” their role through unfair means.
- Players are not allowed to intentionally try to lose. Mafia may not kill each other through night kills or abilities, but they are allowed to lynch each other.
- Forumers who have not joined the game are not allowed to post once the game has started.*
- Players
are
allowed to talk about mafia outside of the forum thread.
- Players
are
allowed to abstain from voting.
- Players
are
allowed to communicate during the night phase.
- The night phase lasts 24 hours. The day phase lasts 48 hours. The game begins on a night phase.
- “ER” abilities may be used every round. “EoR” abilities may be used every other round. “OTU” abilities may be used only once. “Passive” abilities are always in effect.
- Whichever mafia members sends the most recent night kill private message is counted as the one who commits the night kill. Thus, a night kill can be prevented by killing the mafia member who attempts to make the night kill.
- When a player dies, the cause of death (Night Kill, Obliterate, Draco Meteor, Perish Song, Pursuit, etc.) is revealed to everyone.
- There are two copies of every secondary role. Except in the case of Psyduck, these roles are independent of each other. A player will not receive or reveal information due to the actions of another player with the same secondary role.
- There is one copy of each primary role.
- If the vote is tied, the player with the highest “lynch priority” will die. The highest lynch priority is the vanilla civilians, followed by civilians with a primary role, followed by mafia. If the vote is tied between multiple players with the same lynch priority, one of the those players will be lynched randomly.

Primary Roles (Mafia)
:
Giovanni - The leader of Team Rocket and the boss of the Pokemon Mafia, Giovanni has been the mastermind behind nearly every major crime syndicate ever created. He has evaded arrest by disguising himself as an ordinary Gym Leader.
Disguise (EoR): If Giovanni is targeted by the "Befriend" ability while disguised, he will appear to be a vanilla civilian.
Maxie - The leader of Team Magma, Maxie tried to use the legendary pokemon Groudon to expand the amount of land on the world. Maxie was ultimately defeated by Team Aqua.
Tremble (Passive): At the end of each day, if Maxie and Archie both voted on different players, they each permanently gain 0.5 voting power. If Archie does not vote, this ability has no effect.
Archie - The leader of Team Aqua, Archie tried to use the legendary pokemon Kyogre to expand the amount of water in the world. Archie was ultimately defeated by Team Magma.
Drown (Passive): At the end of each day, if Maxie and Archie both voted on different players, they each permanently gain 0.5 voting power. If Maxie does not vote, this ability has no effect.
Cyrus - The leader of Team Galactic, Cyrus nearly succeeded in recreating the universe by using the legendary Pokemon Dialga and Palkia. According to legend, his plan failed when he was defeated by Red.
Obliterate (EoR): Cyrus targets one player. If the target player is also targeted by the “Heal” ability in the same night, the target player is killed.
Ghetsis - The leader of Team Plasma and the last of the Seven Sages, Ghetsis stole countless Pokemon from those who opposed him. Although his empire was ultimately dissolved, some suspect Ghetsis is still lurking in the shadows.
Sage Wisdom (ER): Ghetsis targets one player. At the start of the next day, Ghetsis learns the primary role of the target.

Primary Roles (Civilian)
:
Professor - An old man who wants to learn everything he can about Pokemon. Kind and warmhearted, the Professor is always looking to meet new friends!
Befriend (ER): The Professor targets one player. At the start of the next day, the Professor learns the target's Primary and Secondary roles. The target also learns the identity (username) of the Professor, in addition to the Professor's Primary and Secondary roles.
Nurse - Skilled, experienced, and dedicated to saving the lives of Pokemon and humans alike. The Nurse is passionate about stopping the Mafia's murderous rampage.
Heal (ER): The Nurse targets one player. If the Mafia attempt to Night Kill the target player, there will be no Night kill this round, and the town will be notified of the identities of both the Nurse and the player who was targeted. The Nurse cannot target herself.
Lance - The champion of the Pokemon world. Lance has defeated all eight of the Gym Leaders and conquered the Elite Four.
Duel (ER): Lance targets one player. If the target player attempts to make a Night Kill, the target player dies, and there will be no Night Kill this round. The town will be notified of the identity of Lance.
Red - The child prodigy of the pokemon world. Red is fiercely intelligent, highly secretive, and stronger than even the most elite trainers.
Revenge (EoR): Red may use the primary ability of a civilian who has previously died. However, Red's roles and identity cannot be revealed through the use of his ability. The modified versions are shown below.
Red's Befriend: Red targets one player. At the start of the next day, Red learns the target's Primary and Secondary roles.
Red's Heal: Red targets one player. If the mafia attempt to kill the target player, there will be no Night kill this round, and the town will be notified of the identity of the player who was targeted.
Red's Duel: Red targets one player. If the target player attempts to make a Night Kill, the target player dies, and there will be no Night Kill this round.

Pikachu
Thunder Wave (ER): Pikachu targets one player, setting his voting power to 0 for the next round.
Psyduck
Confusion (EoR): Psyduck targets one player. The next day, Psyduck’s trainer learns the allegiance (either civilian or mafia) of his target. One of the two Psyducks always gives correct information, while the other Psyduck always gives incorrect information. This ability may not be used on the Psyduck’s trainer.
Gengar
Taunt (EoR): Block the primary and secondary abilities of the target player. This ability does not stop night kills. The target player will be told they were targeted by Taunt.
Magikarp
Evolve (OTU): The voting power of Magikarp's trainer permanently increases by the number of days that have passed.
Dragonite
Dragon Dance (Passive): Each night, Dragonite’s trainer gains 0.5 voting power.
Tyranitar
Pursuit (ER): Tyranitar targets one player. If Tyranitar’s trainer dies during that night or the following day, the target player also dies at the same time.
Gardevoir
Trace (Passive): Each day, Gardevoir learns the names of the players who targeted her the previous night.
Salamence
Draco Meteor (OTU): Salamence targets one player, killing him. The next day, the name of Salamence’s trainer is revealed to everyone.
Mismagius
Mean Look/Perish Song (EoR): Mismagius targets one player, inflicting him with Mean Look. If Mismagius targets a player who has already been inflicted by Mean Look by the same Mismagius, the player will be killed by Perish Song.
Porygon-Z
Download (ER): Porygon-Z targets one player. The next day, Porygon-Z’s trainer learns the secondary role of the target.
Jellicent
Night Shade (EoR): Jellicent targets one player. The next day, Jellicent’s trainer learns the the names of the everyone the player targeted.
Mienshao
Bounce (EoR): Mienshao’s trainer avoids the effects of primary and secondary abilities for this night. Players who target Mienshao will be informed that their target used Bounce.
Hydreigon
Dark Pulse (ER): Hydreigon targets one player. The next day, the target’s vote is redirected to whoever Hydreigon’s trainer voted for.

Role Priority is used for determining which roles precede others. Each night phase, the roles with higher priority have their abilities activated first.

Let the sign-ups begin. Time's up. The sign-up phase is a little longer than usual because I would rather start after I've finished exams. This also gives plenty of time for the players to become familiar with the rules and ask any questions, if necessary.
Note that the current rules are designed for 20 players. If we surpass this number, additional roles will be added.

How many of each civvie primary role are there?
This mafia is pretty well designed, and interesting, to say the least. But I think it's quite town favored, though that's a bit subject to secondary role RNG. Hopefully it'll be fun!
