The police force had scheduled an emergency meeting following L's death, but hardly any discussion had occurred. The policemen knew they were risking their lives by being a part of the Kira investigation, but they never expected that L himself would die. They felt lost without him, not knowing how to move forward with the investigation. At last, the silence was broken.
"I think I have an idea who one of the remaining two Kiras is," a policeman said. "I looked through the video footage of the death of one of our fellow policemen and noticed something interesting." He paused, still hesitant to move forward without L. "He died a few nights ago, but it wasn't through one of Kira's normal methods. It seems like he died when a bomb exploded from within his own house."
"Wait, remember how L said that the remaining Kiras are among us?" another policeman spoke up. "There's only one person here who knows how to kill with bombs," he said. The rest of the policeman turned towards 1world24, who was frozen in shock. He pleaded innocence, but the rest of the policemen were unconvinced. They handcuffed 1world24 and executed him.
Hundreds of miles away in England, an old man sat at his desk. He was the head of an orphanage designed to raise an heir to L. The old man had assembled his two brightest children, Near and Mello. He had important news for them.
"What is it, Roger?" Mello asked. His voice showed a feeling of deep concern.
"It's L," Roger said with a grave tone of voice. "He's dead."
"What was that? Roger, what did you just say?" Mello was stunned. The other child, Near, seemed to show nothing but apathy towards the recent news.
"I'm afraid L is dead," Roger replied, trying to remain calm and collected.
"He's dead? But how? Was it Kira? Did Kira kill him? Come on, Roger, you've got to tell me!" Mello leaned against Roger's desk, demanding answers.
"Probably," Roger responded.
"But he promised me he'd find Kira and execute him! And now you're telling me that he's been killed?" Mello grabbed Roger's shirt, yelling at him.
"Mello!" Roger yelled back.
Near sat on the floor, working on a difficult jigsaw puzzle. He placed the puzzle pieces with ease, every move being perfect. Only when the puzzle was complete did he even bother saying anything. He lifted up the board to show his finished work: a solid white puzzle with a small, black L in the corner. The pieces fell to the ground, and Near finally voiced his opinion.
"If you can't win the game, if you can't solve the puzzle, then you're just a loser."
