Once upon a time, there was a colony of bacteria. They had been cultured and primed, and they were multiplying rapidly. That is, until that fateful day when a small sample was taken for testing...
Now some of the bacteria had been isolated from their original colony. They were being used to test a new kind of antibiotic, which was supposed to kill any and all virulent organisms. The antibacterial drug was supposed to behave like antibodies. They would be undistinguishable from the other bacteria, and could inject lethal doses of an experimental substance called "Cytanol." The Cytanol quickly shut down the bacteria by entering the nucleus and isolating the DNA so it couldn't be used to make proteins. Unable to make anything, the target bacterium would quickly lose energy and atrophy. The drug itself was to be called simply Cytol.
And thus was the fate of the small colony of 22 bacteria, with 5 Cytanol makers injected into the colony. Little did the drug company know, bacteria have minds of their own. They knew what was happening. And even though they couldn't distinguish their offenders from the crowd, they could see by proximity who was killing who. Some of them had even evolved to the point where they could read minds. And one of them had a mutation that produced an organelle that, by chance, gave immunity to Cytanol. This bacterial "doctor" was able to export its organelle for brief periods of time, if it so chose. Other bacteria could then pick it up and have temporary immunity. And all of the bacteria had developed individual skills, new organelles and DNA sequences that allowed them to do certain things in the colony.
None of the bacteria had names. They were, after all, single-celled organisms. But the drug testers had a tendency to attach names to things, and had named each bacterium and each Cytol cell. As I narrate this story, I will be using those names.
Day one. The Cytol was put into the colony. Confused, the regular bacteria had a violent reaction. They were annoyed. They had thought that they were in paradise. But in a matter of minutes, they were about to have a fight to the death with a new drug (yes, this entire story is supposed to take place within a half an hour or so of real world time - the bacteria don't have time to reproduce). They had never infected anyone. They had never done anything wrong. And they were being used to test this... this death. The bacteria had a collective consciousness of sorts. A consciousness that, unfortunately for them, had a very bad memory. Confused at the seemingly random movements and rapid protein production of the being called "icecoldbro" the group proceeded to release toxic wastes into the surrounding liquid. Poisoned by these, icecoldbro perished.
icecoldbro was a civilian and a tradesman.
Surprised that the bacteria were intelligent enough to fight back, the Cytol was quick to respond. One of them released some Cytanol into the water, and it quickly permeated to the point that no bacterium could discern its origin. Most of them shut themselves to the importation of matter, but one - the one called "Demagog" - was too slow, as it was apparently adjacent to the original cell that released the Cytanol. Demagog's DNA sensed the Cytanol, and the nucleus tried to block itself off. But the Cytanol entered, engulfed the DNA, and Demagog slowly died of deficiencies.
Demagog was a civilian and a fallen elf.
