Then why would you need to know the topic date if you didn't care to read it?

I don't need anything to happen to this forum, i just think my suggestion would add a bit more polish.

Very true, very true. Still, if one were to care about the date a topic was started they'd need to care about the topic also.

Generally, i believe i would use this to quickly check if a topic is so old that it's outdated or whether it's been necrobumped or something like that

Ah. Then you want the date of the last 5 posts. The first post would tell you nothing.

I think this is the key.... Its not a needed feature as OVER 9000!!!!!!! posters have already pointed out. All it would do is add polish, and polish is never bad.

i think it would be cool if you could read a thread without clicking on it.  also, it would be cool to read a thread without reading it- make it happen.

They are contributing factors though. If you see the date of the first post being in 2010 theres a good chance that it is an old topic that was necro posted in. Then from there you can look at the title, and get even more info. If its in GS&F and was posted in 2010 good chance that it was a necro,

If this topic was created in 2010, and only had 2 pages, then I saw it in my unread posts today, I would know it was a necro.

When I'm at work, if I want to read a thread, I have to click on the user who started the thread, click on 'show posts' and sift through their thousands of posts to find the one I'm looking for. Knowing the date would make this so much easier. ~true story~
