to prevent bad ratings, why not give every topic 2.5 stars? jk.

seriously. while ratings might not be the best way to show how good a topic is, most rational people will be truthful when rating topics. if you dont like the rating, then dont think about it.

I'm with Raptor here.  Since anyone can give the same amount of rating to a topic, just like Karma used to work, it's just as meaningless as Karma used to be.  Personally, I haven't yet bothered to rate a topic.

I agree with nerd1. Many people tend to vote 1 for topics they don't like, and vote 5 for topics they don't like. This becomes a bit of a problem because results are seen after the first vote.

A better system would be, like nerd1 suggested, where results become visible after 3 or 5 votes. That way average or good topics wouldn't get a 1 star rating, with people jumping on the bandwagon and voting low as well.

Problem is that the current plugin does not allow this. Maybe this feature will be added later, or maybe I'll have a look at the code and maybe tweak it to our liking. This will probably take some time though.

i find it sad that people can't be bothered to look at the topic and give it a proper rating between 1 - 5, not just 1 - 5. every time a new system comes up like karma and reputation power and this, people always complain that it's a bad idea or is silly because it gets abused. the systems are perfect in the running, they just aren't immune to those who desire to repetitively disrupt the good nature of the forums by abusing them.

Even among those who may vote exclusively 1 or 5, I doubt you'd find many people who wake up in the morning with malice and forum disruption in their hearts.  It may be that they are just lazy, or so passionate that they think every idea is either awesome or terrible, or they may just not understand how the system is intended to work.  Give some benefit of doubt.

aaaalright then, benefit of the doubt. obviously i was slightly exaggerating (well a lot then) about the evil >:D people out there wanting to kill the forums, but yes they are simply lazy, nd yes laziness does greatly annoy me and if this mistreatment of all our systems continues it'll be the whole of the forums that is annoyed and angered. i guess the message is "be mature, practice restraint, and pay attention".

yes, waiting for a few rates to show the average is a good idea. after all, it isnt much of an average if there are only 3 rates. maybe 10 rates? as for those people who put only 1's and 5's, why not have only a thumbs up/ thumbs down system? that way, there are only two choices.

I dont care about ratings, ratings can given out by random newbs, what I care about in a topic is content, is it worth reading, how well is written, is the subject interesting, etc.
I rather remove the whole rating system, than make it mean something widely important.

I agree. Ratings accomplish nothing except make people angry, it seems.

I don't think topics that exist just to complain should be given high ratings ::). Also, why have rage at some ignorant *cough* really annoying *cough* people giving out bad ratings for no reason? They are just ratings. No one pays them any attention.
i agree with this.
*cough* him *cough*
just dont pay attention to the rating.
and your rage will go away.

Perhaps as mentioned earlier, it would be better to wait until you reach a certain forum rank before you can rate topics. It helps prevent the spam people that dont understand the forums all that much.
