The ads, and other thoughts https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=1394.msg12982#msg12982

Since the whole point of the exercise was to help Zanz make some money through advertising, I hope putting some in would be top priority.

I appreciate all the work put in by scaredgirl and chriskang, but I know how easy it is to get distracted by shiny new things :)

And speaking of shiny new things, my other first impressions of the new forums are:
a) The background is very ... loud. Perhaps copying the lovely background on the game site would be better, it would help keep consistency  between the game and these forums.

b) I love the top image with a card from each element, but the text overlaying it is very difficult to read.

FWIW I'm using Opera 10.10

Anyway, thanks for all the hard work.

I agree- that background is a bit distracting. It looked good to start but the bright colors distract from the forum itself.

The top image is movable with the width of your browser. If I'm only viewing in a small window, it's behind the text. If I go fullscreen it's off to the side. Maybe that will help you- unless you have a low screen resolution.

Ads are already in place and you should see them. If not, then there could be something wrong with the settings, although I did double-check the permissions yesterday.

As for ads being the "whole point" and "top priority", they really aren't. Anyone who has done websites and used Google Adsense knows that it won't make you rich.

Elements the Game gets many times more hits than our forum ever will, and you can ask Zanz how many cars he bought with Elements ad revenue. :) Reality is that if you want to make some REAL money with online ads, you need a website with thousands and thousands of visitors each day. Money this site creates would probably not even be enough to pay for hosting.

I purposely kind of exaggerated the awesomeness of increased ad revenue when I proposed this idea because I knew that this was the best way to get people aboard. Of course every cent counts but if someone thinks this forum will generate hundreds of dollars each year, he is mistaken. The real "point of this exercise" is of course the community. Now we have full control over our own forums and we can customize it just the way we want. I have big plans for this community and new forums are just the first step.

As for text being difficult to read.. that's mainly because the forums are still under construction and things will change. I am well aware that the main navigation is impossible to read with pictures behind it but it was never my intention to leave it that way. It will be fixed. Just like some of that black text on dark background will, etc.

I was talking about the bubbles going down the sides, not the top menu bar.

Having a dark central area surrounded by big, bright circles is pretty, but distracting when trying to read.

Agreed.  Even if you just desaturated the image some to tone the colors down, I think that'd be enough.  Or you could even go completely grayscale with them.

I was actually replying to the OP.

And yes, I'm well aware of importance of contrast in graphic design. However in this case I cannot just remove the background image because that would make these forums too bland and would hurt that "Elements look" I was going for.

We have layout customizing limitations because we're using a customized version of the default template. We are doing that to avoid any compatibility issues with our 20+ modifications.

We have on option of putting the background image only on the right side (like it was before). Or maybe make those icons less bright (like 50% transparency or something) but that could again possibly make these forums look bland. We have to test it.

We have many different options but this is still in beta mode and we have more important things to take care of first. And with layouts, whatever we do, there are as many opinions as there are users on this forum so it's impossible to find a solution that everyone likes.

When the dust settles, I will make a light-color version of this same template. We won't be offering any non-Elements themes. Elements brand should be visible at all times. Also modifications have to be installed on every single theme which is more work than you'd think.

PEBKAC - At some point I'd used Opera's content blocker to block google ads for all sites, it's fine now.

I know well, I think the general hope is it might buy him a beer every few months.

I figured you were being disingenuous, but thought it should be followed through anyway, if for no other reason than to maintain enthusiasm. It's moot now anyway.

Yeah, just threw them out there, there's no such thing as bad feedback, just poorly researched feedback (such as complaining about the lack of ads... :) )

The dimming of the background image (and 2 Tylenol) has done the trick!

Thanks :)

I made it blend into the black 50%, and my initial reaction is that it's much better this way. I actually tried this same thing earlier and didn't like it, but I was using brown background which probably made the difference. With black it looks pretty cool.

Agreed.  Even if you just desaturated the image some to tone the colors down, I think that'd be enough.  Or you could even go completely grayscale with them.
I won't go grayscale because the whole idea is to have all the colors in the same order they appear in the "color circle" (no idea what the English term is).

Also making them grayscale would kill our Elements brand.

Everyone give feedback on the new -50% background.

Yes, you are right. So far it's been about me asking for feedback and when I get it (text colors suck, etc.), I reply with "Stfu noob, I know it's broken and I will change it later".

That's not how it should be of course. It's my fail because I haven't had time to write the "New Forum FAQ" yet, which will explain all the things that I know should be changed and will be changed when I have time.
