Title: Suggest new Off-Topic categories
Post by: Scaredgirl on April 16, 2011, 07:46:37 am
Our forum software lists sub-categories in 4 columns. This means that in order to maximize the space we have, the number of sub-categories should be divided by 4.

Today I added a new sub-category called Arcade (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?action=arcade). But now the number of subcategories is 9, so we can add 3 new categories to get all the columns full. We don't absolutely have to get 3 new categories, but if people have any ideas, please let me know.

So please post your ideas for new Off-Topic sub-categories. Thank you.

Well I looked at off-topic threads to see if there was a kind of topic that could easily be placed in a seperate sub-forum, and like it or not, but goodbye topics seem to fit just that. After all, we already have a sub-section for introduction, would make sense to have one for saying goodbye as well :P

Sports doesn't seem to get a lot of love here unfortunately.
Maybe changing it to Sports and Fitness might give it some incentive to work out for the forum.

This is just brainstorming here, but things that occasionally get brought up are homework help and science topics, perhaps merging maths, science and generic homework help might be useful. Not sure how to categorise it though.

I dislike the idea of a goodbye forum. But maybe...
Also, I was slightly annoyed when a certain topic got deleted, the one with the wigs, despite the fact that it was completely useless. Threads like that perhaps could be put in a locked section for me to personally laugh at. But that's probably taking things way too far.

- current affairs (must be of global importance so everyone has something to say)

- i do like the idea of an educational section where members can ask and answer any question and queries to do with school, collage, and university

- a music section? it could be a link to the providers of pieces and sound bits that are used in the game and the forums. this could come with a section where you can post what good music you find and a place where you can suggest sounds and music that you found for the actual game

I like forum games, and because only a few can post in that board (you need pm $$$man), it's kinda...
also, mafia is a very large side game of the community, probably the largest that doesn't use EtG, aside from WoE
I think mafia deserves its own secret sections and whatnot
each player gets his own secret board he can choose to reveal and hide from others
though I think that's a bit too much work, because only SG has the permission for secret forums

"Music" is something that I think everyone will agree on. I was also thinking about adding "Movies and TV" because that is a popular topic too.

So that would leave one spot open. Keep those ideas coming.

How about grouping music, movies and TV together as popular media?

if you are going to add "Movies and TV" can you move my thread (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,22395.0.html) over there?

If you want to add three new sections, the best ideas are probably these:
These would cover a good deal of the topic in the Off-Topic board.

*music, TV, movies, books, etc.

imo, there should be writing board. it should be seperate from the creative arts  board only because it seems to create a discrepancy between visual art and literal art.
i reckon there should also be a theorizing thread which intends to be a discussing board that relates to the elements or conceptual topics from EtG in general.

random fights like 2-1 players in elements and post in the off topic fourm for bragging rights

I know this isn't likely to happen, but there should be a teeny section for discussing other computer games.

A) Draconian rule, no discussion of other games allowed.
B) Freedom to discuss other games with gamers on a forum dedicated to an online game.

Philosophy

There are times where things feel a little bit out of place to just be in off-topic, but they aren't really religion, or politics.

It would be nice to have a dedicated board just to talk about ideas.

I'd like to see a separate category for other video games - right now the closest we have is "Forum Games."

a tech talk forum for non elements related things. That way people can ask their computer questions if needed. It could also be used to discuss useful programs and apps.

As far as a game forum, I think it would be fine as long as its not other flash games. thats elements really only competition. Sure theres WoW or runescape, but those are fundamentally different from elements due to them not being flash.

One should be called "Good-bye threads."

I'm only half-joking.

it's true there have been quite a few threads created where some user or other is leaving. i remember early this year we had about 5 consecutive "bye bye" threads. somehow i don't feel that this is going to put into action though.

i personally am all for a n alternate game discussion board.

It might be practical to combine the hello and goodbye sections, if we want to squeeze one more in there.  The only downside I can see is that some people might be reminded of past people leaving when they go to greet a newbie.

Gaming.  For discussion of video games, flash games, table top games, and gaming the system.  Okay, maybe not the last one.

Interesting idea, but how did it work exactly?

I personally find Philosophy to be quite niche. It would probably be a section where we would have a handful of very active members, but the majority couldn't care less. But I could be wrong. Maybe we'll add this later.

I think we are still missing things like "Visual Arts" and "Writing", although I'm not sure about the names.

Would making a section like 'Debates', and having subsections for philosophy, politics, and religion be a possible idea?

There's already a politics sub-thingy (can't think of the word right now). So, Debate would either be philosophy and religion, or have the politics sub-forum in it, as a debate subsection.

@ SG How about 'Visual Arts and Writing' for a name?

Or maybe just 'Art'?

That's my point. Moving the topics in religion and politics to subsections of a 'Debate' board.
