I don't agree with the idea that not having standings is somehow fun. For many players it's actually the opposite because for them it's the competitive aspect in trying to be the best what is the core of the fun in gaming. If the win/loss ratio is optional and there is no real "winner", then what's the point? Just image if War didn't have a winner and we just played for "fun". All other PvP related events on the forum have a winner so why should Duels be any different?
I don't think you understand what I'm trying to get at with the Duel Section. First of all, I'm not saying standings are not fun, and I'm not saying that the competition you get in War and in the PyP Events isn't fun. It's great. I like it a lot too. Fighting to be the best, going for the win...
But this isn't an Event. The whole point here is to be unofficial, player run, and casual. If players are looking for high level competition, they enter War or League.
That's what the events are there for. I can't imagine War without a winner, but that's not the point. I can easily imagine Duels without an "Official" winner because that's how I want to design it to run.
Win/Loss Ratio is optional because I don't want to force people to have to keep track of it in this section. It's great to keep track of, it gives others ideas on who's the best, but the point is not the outcome, it's the duels themselves. Duels is different because rather than the main event, it's more just the place.
To make an analogy with soccer: League is all the matches you play during the season. You want to be the best, so you try to get as many wins as possible. War is a Soccer Tournament. You face off with other teams to aim for first place. The level of competition is intense, and you have to abide by all the official rules or face penalties.
But then, Duels is like the Soccer field. You have the ball, you know the game, but you go to the field to play. And you play with friends, you don't really care about what the boundaries are, you just know you wanna score on the other net. You play to win, but it's more casual. Eventually you start losing track of the score, and then some guy is being annoying and picks up the ball, and then you call last goal wins and it's all fun anyways.
I like events that are clearly structured. The more "anything goes" this is, the less reason I see to implement it as an official forum event. Lets take that win/loss ratio as an example. I would understand if we had standings or I would maybe understand we didn't keep score at all, but having score keeping optional just doesn't make any sense to me.
As I said, this isn't an event. There's a reason this is in the Forum Suggestions and Feedback rather than in Post Your PvP Event Ideas Here!
The point is that is' unofficial, not official.
It's not that it's not possible without the section, but the section gives it a place. You would go to Duels rather than General Discussion to organize duels because that's what the section is made for. It's the same reason you come to the Elements Forum to discuss Elements.
Is there any light in what I'm trying to say?
