improving deck searching https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=16605.msg212560#msg212560

this is a request from a coding/scripting noob, please forgive me if i request something impossible or a 2 year project. ^^

i want to ask all the pros out here if something like this is possible/doable:

problem: the deck sections i growing huge and finding a specific deck is getting harder.
if you want to find a deck with e.g. fire nymphs in it... good luck.
this also causes several decks get posted twice or more without intention.

my idea now:
the searching engine can find parts of a deckcode (like 5fk for red nymph).
now, you need to use the trainer to figure a specific card code and copy it in the forum search.
if we could have a layer in this forum, where you can generate a card code (by clicking on a picture or a cards name) and put it in the search we would have something like a deck searching funtion.

please comment and discuss ;)

Yeah this sounds like a good idea.  Half the problem lies with people searching for the name of a particular card but not having it appear simply because the creature's name doesn't appear in the deck code and therefore that deck will not appear when searched.  Only issue I can see with this is that of course newer players might not consider searching for individual deck codes.  The simplest solutions for making something like this possible would be to either do as hrmmm has suggested and also create a sticky addressing the best ways to search for deck ideas.  OR the system could be somehow be changed to make it that typing in Supernova (could) = typing in 6u3 (which would be a huge task to change all this, but it might be worth it in the long run).

Loved the new stickies in each of the deck sections. Though it might only reduce same decks posted by just a little bit, it is definitely a helpful sticky. Following is just my 2 cents - please disregard if you hate it. :P

As of now, I can see that the quick search only offers 3 options - search within "this topic", "this board" and "entire forum". Using "entire forum" seems too broad to find certain decks and the "this board" option is also quite limited as it only works on few boards - probably only one; which is in the rainbow deck section.

Using the forum extensive search (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?action=search) function is probably the only solution. So, what I did was to put the card codes that I want to search and select the Decks section (by clicking the link "Deck", I can mark all of its sub-sections too), and perform the search (screenshot below).

Not sure if this is workable, but my point is - it will be wonderful to have these steps integrated as one of the options in the quick search function. Maybe call it "Deck section". If it is not possible however, I think we can at least put these steps in the sticky as well just as an additional guide - although a more comprehensive steps should be better, I think.

im glad you like it  :D
i added more information about searching in different forum sections.

actually, if you search for a certain card combo or part of a deck, searching in the whole board isnt that bad (there shouldn't be much deck codes in the forum news e.g.).
you could even find some war decks with this method.

of corse every step that reduces the search results you get, is helping to get what you need.

i agree, to be able to mark a specific board would be very nice.
also the whole searching thing, could be more handsome.

we might get something epic in the future for that purpose, we will see.

I love this idea good job hrmmm this would slove alot of users problems with finding certains decks because theres endless new topics with similer decks and there hard to find so some players just look at the deck archieve.Since it is cleaner and well orginize this idea will take awhile to set up but it will benefit on the long run for this site.

this is actually completely feasible hrmmm. It would take close to a week (189 hours=7 days) to code, but that's irrelevant because it can be saved and resumed at a later date ^_^
The code would actually be very simple:
Code: [Select]
[anchor=<relevant string to give the anchor name>] Text[/anchor]
...
[iurl=#<string used in above code>] Text or Image[/iurl]
So yea, it's rather simple to code, but considering all the decks in the deck board atm (and still growing) even with a team of 4 people it'd take a few days to a week total to finish it. That's 48-189 hours of free time XD

http://jumpoffduck.co.cc/elements/search/search.htm (http://jumpoffduck.co.cc/elements/search/search.htm)

Proof of concept for possible solution - when you type <card name>, it replaces it with the deck code for that card. To get upped cards that have the same name, add (e) at the end.

So:
<red nymph> -> 5fk
<pulverizer(e)> -> 77f
Hi I'm an <abomination> -> Hi I'm an 4ve

Possible improvement: have an autocomplete box pop up when "<" is typed

ou... erm... we would need volunteers to help with that coding then (raises my hand), otherwise, that would sound like a 1/2 year project^^
as it didnt looks that complex, but time intense, this could be done in a team.

very nice, jumpoffduck. thats exactly what i was looking for.
seems like a very nice base to improve the search on this forum.

is it possible to autoadd the <>?
a check box for upgraded cards would be nice.

Hm could you elaborate a bit more? I'm not entirely clear on what you want. (Maybe a MS Paint diagram or something? :P)

MS Paint... aye^^ :

tipping (e) and <>'s, is not a problem, but without that,  it would make it easyer for forum newcomers to use it.

The problem is that maybe a person wants to search for a deck with both upped and unupped cards, or have normal search terms in addition to the cards

-EDIT-

Packaged my script into a greasemonkey script if anyone's interested: http://jumpoffduck.co.cc/elements/search/search_cards.user.js (http://jumpoffduck.co.cc/elements/search/search_cards.user.js)

Does the same thing as my demo, except it works on the actual forums.
