Okay, this is kind of a long and complicated idea, but I think it could potentially be one of the more popular sections if we do something like this.

The majority of the PvP happening in Elements right now is either large-scale events such as Tournaments or the PvP Event sections, or the random battles you play when using the in-game PvP.

There is very little on the forums based on organizing single battles, which IMO is one of the funner ways to spend time. However, as of now, PvP Duels are entirely limited to popping into chat and basically going:

"Anyone wanna have a duel?"

At which point someone answers:

"Sure. Upped or Unupped?"

And that's as far as it goes. But I think it would be really cool to have a way of properly organizing epic 1 on 1 Battles, or utilizing special rules in single battles and not just in events or tournaments.

That's why I propose an entirely new section devoted to organizing duels. The section will be unofficial in every way, and be primarily run by players involved.

This is how I imagine it to work:

It will be divided into 2 sections, the Challenges section and the Special Rules section. Possibly a third Unofficial Tournaments Section for things like SHUT.

I'll start by explaining the Special Rules section.

This will basically be a large collection of Special Rules you can use in duels.

A "READ THIS FIRST" Sticky topic will provide information on how to use the section, and define the default Tournament style Rules.

Default Ruleset:

- "Best out of" (3, 5, 7, 27, etc.)
- Allowed to change decks between battles.
- Card Restrictions may be in place (eg. SoG is banned, Airborne creatures only, etc.)
- Certain types of decks may have to be used. (Mono, Duo, Rainbow, 30 card, 60 card, etc.)
- May incorporate "Set Decks". (eg. Elder Decks only)

This will be the default ruleset used for battles. Within that topic, other people can post "Variations" of the ruleset.
In this example, all the previous tourneys could be listed as variations, or you could create your own.

Of course, the default isn't all there is. You could post your own "Rules" that people could use in their duels.

Usually Special Rules will involve something that happens in between duels, forcing you to use certain decks rather than the freedom of the default ruleset, or the win condition changes in some special way.

Many examples can be found in the PvP Events section. (War, Sideboard, 12 Lives, Draft, etc. use Special Rules.)

If you have an idea for a Special Rule, you would start a topic explaining how it works. There people will both help you develop your idea and post variations on the ruleset.

That basically sums up the Special Rules section.

Now the more important section, the Challenges Section.

This is where all the challenges take place.

Every members that are interested in receiving or giving challenges from ANYONE else can make a topic in this section.

The topic is titled with their Name, Status, and optionally things like winstreak, W/L ratio, Score, etc. (These are unofficial, but it might be fun to keep track of.)

Name is the forum name.
Status is marked with either (R) (Receiving Challenges) (C) (Challenge Available) or (O) (Occupied).

For example, I might name my topic "EvaRia (R) 3W 2L" or similar.

The topic itself contains basic information.

Forum Name
Chat Name
In-Game Name

Time Zone

Upped/Unupped Preference
Favourite Ruleset
etc.

Status

Either
- Currently Receiving Challenges
(This means that you are willing to accept any challenges from anyone.)

- Current Challenge
(This means you are sending out a specific challenge out to anyone. With this you provide information like whether it's upped or unupped, a link to the exact variation of rules you want to use, and any other information like bans. People can choose to accept this challenge.)

or

- Currently Occupied
(This means you are busy or away and cannot accept any challenges at that moment.)

After this, people will reply to your Thread if they want to Duel you.

If you are receiving challenges, they choose what rules they want to use.
If you have a specific challenge posted, they can choose to accept it.

They cannot obviously duel you if you are occupied.

After this they take it to PMs and find a time to duel, and carry it out.

If you don't want to send or receive challenges like this you don't have to start your own topic to challenge others. The people who start topics are only those who want to challenge anyone. If you just want to play one match against someone who's listed, you don't need to add a topic to the section to do so.

And that's basically how it would work.

So what I'm asking here is whether or not you like the idea and whether or not you would use it.
Personally I think it would be really cool and could potentially improve the PvP experience a lot.

I like it. Personally, I don't like to commit to a lot of pvp events at once, because they can start to conflict really quickly, so when I'm bored I definitely see myself checking to see if anyone has an interesting challenge or such up. And you're right, friendly, just-for-fun style pvp duels are great. They're the main situation you can use a deck that's more focused on being fun or unusual.

Something like this could definitely work. I will look into it some more after I do this other thing.

:o Yes! This would get me playing Elements again. Yeah, I stopped. Bunch of reasons. But a duel section would be perfect for me...
Have I mentioned how much I like this idea?

Ok, lets do this.

Any more ideas on what the actual section would look like? like what sub-categories, what topics, what rules etc?

Under Duels I think no sub-categories, it will be a straight Find your opponent. People can make their own challenger threads according to EVaRia's system, which is basically your duelling profile (Can we integrate this with profiles maybe?).
A Read this first sticky that explains the system
Another sticky that you can post in if you don't want to make your own thread but just want to say "I want to play a best of three with this(linked) ruleset" We can call it "Practice Duels" or something.

I think give the special rules its own section, not under PVP duels since it may be useful to other PVP events. Plus some people may like coming up with interesting rules the way people like creating interesting decks. I would see that working kind of like the Deck section.
It can be divided into Upgraded, Unupgraded, and mixed rulesets. Each ruleset is created as a topic and discussion/variations etc inside that. So something like this.

Events and Competitions

    * PvP Tournaments

    * PVP Leagues

   .........

    * Duels
            Read me First (Sticky)
            Practice Duels (Sticky)
            Mafidufa (C) 1W 1L (Thread)
            EvaRia (R) 3W 2L (Thread)

    * Rulesets
            Unupgraded (Sub-category)
                 Mafidufa's ultimate unupped ruleset (Thread)
            Upgraded (Sub-category)
                 Mafidufa's ultimate upped ruleset (Thread)
            Mixed
Mafidufa's ultimate slightly upped ruleset (Thread)

Is this kind of like what you were thinking EvaRia?

(Section) Duels
>(Sticky) Welcome to the Duel section! (Basic explanation of section, welcome, etc. Only thread in the main section.)

>(Childboard) Special Rules
>>(Sticky) READ THIS FIRST! (Explanation of section and template to be used when posting special rules.)
>>(Sticky) Default Ruleset (Tournament style rules, explained in my OP.)
>>Threads made by people (Ruleset ideas)
>>>Ruleset variants

>(Childboard) Challengers
>>(Sticky) READ THIS FIRST! (Explanation of section and template used to post your duel profile, as well as how to post in people's thread to either challenge them and accept challenges.)
>>Threads made by people (Duel Profiles)
>>>Posts accepting challenges or offering challenges.

That's the basic idea that I was thinking.

Rules for posting a thread Special Rules:

A Special Ruleset needs to do at least one of the following things:

1. Something happens between matches that affects your next deck choice. (Eg. Vault based rules like War.)
2. The win condition for the entire duel is altered. (Eg. Life based systems, point based systems, anything that's not "Best out of" fits this category.
3. The win condition for individual games is altered. (Eg. Suicide, Quanta race, etc.)

Most of the rest is player run, so that's the important bits.

Fun! Though I am ignorant of many terms like 'Elder Decks' and such, so do not forget to place information on these things as well.

Random Suggestion: Might we integrate this on both the game page and the profiles? It would only be a little pop-up box saying 'such-and-such has challenged you to a battle, Best of 3, No Restrictions! Yes/No.'
Might go a bit quicker that way.

Another sticky that you can post in if you don't want to make your own thread but just want to say "I want to play a best of three with this(linked) ruleset" We can call it "Practice Duels" or something.
This is unnecessary, btw.

If you wanna do that, you just find some who's (R) and post your challenge in their thread.

OK your organization is better. I support that. Though if I am getting you right, I think the default ruleset thread will quickly become unwieldy with too many variations. Just putting in all the past tournament formats is a lot of posts. Plus adding in
Quote
- Card Restrictions may be in place (eg. SoG is banned, Airborne creatures only, etc.)
- Certain types of decks may have to be used. (Mono, Duo, Rainbow, 30 card, 60 card, etc.)
That can make very many variations in a single thread. How about a thread called "Creative Card Culling" - well Creative Card Bans, but hey its alliterative - which is just variations on banning different cards. Then I can say in my challenger thread "no airborne creatures(linked), 9 card sideboard(linked), Best of 5" Then the default ruleset thread will have variations like Mono, Duo, 30 card, 60 card, Starter Decks only, False God Decks(Halved) only...

I was thinking Practice Duels might encourage more casual duelers, but not having that thread may encourage the same people to sign up with their own thread. Plus there's always chat...

So what needs to be written, four Stickys?
