2. Starting and finishing different projects that benefit the Elements community

This kind of thing. Its one of the jobs of council members. Perhaps if after 1 year, the council hasnt done anything like this, its time to try to find people who will. Note, im not saying im that person, im not active enough (except a very active lurker). Guilds is a good example of one of these events that can be started since you asked what I would do.

And im not saying picking staff members is easy or insignificant, im saying it doesnt take 1 year.

As someone who isn't part of the council, this last year has been hectic beyond most.  SG has been MIA, severely handicapping the council and preventing any sort of actual power.  Then the Mighty Forum Migration took place alongside War and other Fun Stuff.  Honestly, the Council has had closer to half a year where they are actually capable of making decisions.  I don't think it's an appropriate time to judge them right now.

Ill agree that they have had a lot to deal with as far as the moving and all that.  Ive said my peace as far as council and the past year goes.

I think when the next council is elected, things outside of electing staff members should be made a priority this time around. How did SG do the elections for the council?

The last election involved an application process straight to SG's PM box.  All other elections involved a somewhat public application process where each candidate composed a bit about themselves on the voting thread before the voting began.  SG changed it from this because the elections essentially became a popularity contest when it should have been to find people who were competent enough to remain on Council and actually contribute while being a member.  It was pretty embarrassing how many people literally did nothing before SG made that change.

Personally I think having an application would be a good start, however, as SG did this as her main job, she was able to commit to all of that and really examine everything. . I think a better idea this go around would be to have the moderators or perhaps even councilmen (although they could theorettically create a monopoly out of this, I give our community the benifit of the doubt) sift through the applications and throw out certain ones that would definitly not work, and then from there have a community vote. Councilmen to me, sounds like something that would be elected by the people, and if we were to leave it completely up to mods, then I think the name should be changed.

I like the idea I read earlier that councilmen that become inactive could lose their seat instantly. The recall election in Wisconsin comes to mind. We just need some sort of safety net in case there was a problem with a certain councilmen.

Now, I've been in council for 2/3 terms.

There are no strippers and cakes. Actually, being in council is nothing extraordinary. You just do what you have to do.
Actually, we were caught up in various issues after SG was eaten by a poisonous bus.
After the forum change all issues were dealt with pretty quickly.
A new council may be nice for people to look shiny and all, but seriously, you're not missing out on strippers.
If more councilmen were to be elected after some went away was proposed and discussed more than once in the new forums, but it looked like there was no need to.

tl;dr: I am a self-electing bastard.

Here's my personal council experience:
  • 13th on 1st council, behind the wise and illustrious Councillor smuglapse.
  • Helped T. Morm create the 10 questions with zanz idea.  Unbeknownst to us vrt was doing an interview of his own concurrently so his happened and ours got taken over by SG's council and then never happened.
  • Created the End of Year Forum Awards idea, only to once again see it taken by SG's council.  The end result turned out nicely and all but y'know.. I would have liked to have been a part of it.

So if YOU were on the Council, what would YOU do?
Lots.  But it's been a month since I asked about elections and none of the Admins or Council members seem interested in doing them.  : /

You gotta remember, SG was a very, VERY controlling person. Remember there was only one admin back then.

Also, the Council HAS been working on your second point.

At this point I'm having a hard time understanding what your reason was for starting this thread/discussion in the first place.

You voice the complaint in your locked thread that we're not doing enough currently, but then act offended when you're not directly involved in something that we actually do manage to accomplish.  Here's something I feel I should point out to you:  Your idea was implemented.  Would you prefer that over us ignoring your idea completely?  If your goal was to do something for the community then the answer should be no.  Both of the projects you referenced received a great deal of positive feedback once they were implemented, so why is there a problem just because you weren't involved in it?

So if YOU were on the Council, what would YOU do?
Lots.  But it's been a month since I asked about elections and none of the Admins or Council members seem interested in doing them.  : /
I've already given you several reasons why this isn't going to happen quickly and I also advised for people to be patient while the whole Council system was revised and improved.  It seems a bit rash for you to say none of us seem interested in doing them when these discussions obviously aren't going to be public, hence you have no idea as to what's actually being discussed or not.  And as majofa already stated, we are working on this.  However, do keep in mind that we're currently lacking an admin due to RL complications which consequently means that this discussion may take much longer than it would have otherwise.  Once again, I'm asking you to be patient.

Saying that he or anyone has been impatient when the current council has been here for a long time and has had (once again, giving 6 month leeway due to the move) half a year to decide what to do with the new council is not just unfair, but completly wrong. 3 month cycle was SGs idea, which after the first few Coucils was realized to be a bad idea.. just the same as community voting. The latter was just a popularity contest and half the Council would be inactive after the first month.

As of now, the Council has worked on many projects and are working on several at the moment as well.

And Jenkar's link.

@Yellow Waiting 1 year seems pretty patient to me. ITs not like plastique waited 3 months like the normal cycle and then just immediately made a topic asking why  there havent been new elections.
Our term began approximately 11 months ago.  Our term should have ended a number of months after that (I believe SG extended it to 6?).  Either way, no one's been waiting a year for anything.  I'd prefer that this exaggeration didn't become misinterpreted into fact.  I'd also prefer that this discussion continue to be about what to look for when electing Council 5 rather than giving examples of every little piece of personal resentment that people have held onto about the Council since the beginning of time; I won't offer any input of my own if that happens because I'm not interested in fueling a hate thread.

This is probably one of the reasons why plastique thinks the new council shouldnt have any of the old members on it, because this has been so unorganized.
The forum move occurred 5 months before the issue of electing a new Council was raised by anyone on the forums (to my knowledge).  Before this time I never even considered raising the issue of electing a new Council to the Council itself.  Why?  Because 1) it never appeared to be a priority before then and 2)  it has always been the responsibility of the Admin* to decide what to expect from Council, not us ourselves.
*I have no idea what type of discussion has taken place between any of our Admins about what they want the Council to do from this point forward.

I ask for patience not because I don't believe we've overstayed our welcome for more time than we should have, but because this problem will not go away until it has been properly discussed and dealt with.  Because like I said before, the system previously in place was destroyed when SG disappeared without a trace and will not be solved by simply bringing a new Council into power.  You'd get some amount of initial productivity at the beginning of the term, but things would eventually degrade back into our current position, I promise you.  You could expect to have this exact same discussion reemerge nearly every single time a term ended, which I don't think most of the community would want to happen, so why don't we work towards fixing it once and for all?

So while it seems reasonable to say we've had 6 months to fix this problem, the reality is that we (and by we I mean the Council) haven't been aware that this problem was so pressing until approximately 1 month ago; community feedback remains the greatest way of reflecting on what needs to be evaluated and fixed, after all.  This isn't another case of someone voicing their opinion and having it seemingly be ignored, us posting and discussing the problem alone is enough to show that we're looking to resolve it.  I know that I personally take this entire discussion very seriously now that it's been brought to my attention, but I alone can't take a direct course of action that would solve the problem.

Note that this is just my take on this as someone inside of Council.  The last side of this issue that remains to be expressed is from the point of view of one of our Administrators.
