nyaa, wud u leik it if i alwz talkd leik dish, desu-ka?

1. Read 4.
2. Okay, so you believe that if SG was forced to change her default, then she would throw a temper tantrum and ragequit from the forums? And Uppercut suggesting to the Council/community something that he reasonably believes would make this forum better has nothing to do with Uppercut suddenly being granted mod-powers by a third party and banning defaults on whim.
4. Anime/manga of all kinds involves simplification or idealization/distortion of human features. See barbie dolls. Sure, some might look sexier in short skirts rather than t-shirts, but in the end they're all plastic stick-figures. You shouldn't just jump to the conclusion that Uppercut is making a hasty generalization, you don't know what genres or drawing styles of anime/manga Uppercut has been exposed to. For all we know, he has already seen what you say is "aesthetically pleasing" and still disagrees. For all we know, a majority of the population on Earth could find what you say is "aesthetically pleasing" childish or perverse.

And I think you misunderstood my weeaboo/wapanese point.
The term "wapanese" refers to people who incorrectly act "japanese" for the sake of acting japanese for the sake of fulfilling their anime/manga obsession. (the last part was hypothesized)
If I had a default of Superman, then you could reasonably assume that I either idolize Superman or am obsessed with Superman.
If I had a default of Bieber, then you could reasonably assume that I either idolize Bieber or am obsessed with Bieber.
So if anyone had a default of a manga/anime character, couldn't anyone new to the forums reasonably assume that he likes adding desu-ka's at the end of declarative sentences?
Ok time to throw my hat into the ring for real now.
Ok show me the last time an otaku ( fan of anime and/or manga ) ever spoke anything like your first sentence. I assume you generalize that all or at least most otaku talk like that. If you don't then why bother typing it?
1. See 4 I Guess, I am too lazy to reply to this one.
2. I am not even going to justify that with a proper reply. I am sure someone will come by to rip you a new one for this terrible point shortly enough, number 3 4 looks better to waste my time on.
3. Is 3 missing or did a swarm of scarabs eat it?
4. I love how you put that, it's so flawed! You defend a comparison between barbie which is targeted to little girls and anime/manga which is targeted to almost every age group! I love it! Also no we don't know what uppercut has seen but he did not give any details on it so we assume he is generalizing until he comes on and tells us. From his past post saying he generalizes is a safe bet.  Remember even among "aesthetically pleasing" Anime there are still different types. Anime is just a story told through animation, is that hard to understand at all?

Let me be clear on a few things.
If I had a default of Superman, then you could reasonably assume that I like the character known as superman but he would not be my idol, nor an obsession.

Last time I check I have not played with a Phoenix or ash, I just like how it looks.
If I had a default of Bieber, then you could reasonably assume that I like his music and maybe not him.
So if anyone had a default of a manga/anime character, couldn't anyone new to the forums reasonably assume that he likes adding a period at the end of a sentence.
Back to bed now.

I did not think that this would be blown out of proportions like it have been. Apparently Uppercut struck a sensitive nerve among many people. Few make valid counterarguments and instead flame and belittle this suggestion and contemplating ways to just mess with him ie trolling. Its easy to pick this suggestion apart and instead you do this.

plus this idea is a really bad idea, because as long as the avatar in not obscene, people are just exercising their freedom of speech.
This, you may not like anime but others do, you are not forced to watch their avatars or associate with them.

Belittle is a nice term to use there, it was the thread starter who drew first blood. When he/she/it makes a post like that they get no respect and justly so. Why bother with a counterargument when the whole thread is about censorship of something as innocent as anime/manga for the sole purpose of one persons dislike of it?

I don't understand why people actually took this thread seriously. I thought it couldn't be more obvious that the original post was somewhat a joke.

I actually laughed hard reading the "ugly as sin" and "abomination" part.

Don't feed the troll.

I imagine most of us just consider this a silly suggestion that doesn't really need to be argued against. just lol'ed at. I'm not even 100% sure whether the OP is serious or not.

Heh, this is funny  :P  .....Even though I kinda agree with Uppercut, it does get annoying to see anime avatars. Banning is a bit...too aggresive of a move, I think.

So....RIP Topic. Let it die >.<

I wish I had time to reply to this thread sooner. There were some decent (I guess) counterarguments I'd like to address.

1. Thought police - I forgot who mentioned this (sorry) but it was on the first page. So what? This is a private website, and the right to free speech doesn't extend to privately owned things. Just like you can be kicked out of a restaurant for saying things that would otherwise be protected in public you can be kicked off a website for doing or saying things that would otherwise be protected, and this website has plenty of examples of this. Discussion of sexual activity is not illegal, however it is against the forum's TOS. Racist speech is not against the law, however is against the forum's TOS. These are forms of thought policing too. Why shouldn't Zanz be able to extend his thought policing further?

2.
Just because anime is childish and stupid is no reason to ban it from being used as an avatar, as long as it isn't hentai or something obscene like that.  Sure, I'd like it if there weren't any more ugly anime avatars, too, but people have the right to use it as their avatar.  Every community has something like this.
Obscenity isn't something objective, which is why obscenity laws have been hard to define. This is also why America developed the miller test which is still often argued against (I'm personally against the miller test but that's another discussion entirely.). What you find obscene, I might not. The reason we're not aloud to have pornographic avatars or avatars that depict extreme violence has absolutely nothing to do with how obscene some people would find them, rather how obscene the site owners finds them in relation to the website itself. I'd have a Bailey Jay dickgirl avatar if it were appropriate, however since it doesn't represent what this community is like it is inappropriate for me to do so. If it were about what we personally find offensive we've had at least 3 people here mention that they find anime visually displeasing. Just like I respect your (likely) opinion that pictures depicting real life beheading are distasteful, please respect the fact that I find anime equally (and possibly even more) distasteful.

3. Aesthetically anime just...Jesus Christ, I can't explain it. Anime is the ugliest looking "art" ever (and I use the word art as loosely as possible). That guy who took a picture of Jesus in piss has more taste than wapanese kids.

4.
Anime is just a story told through animation, is that hard to understand at all?
There is far more to it than that when defining anime.  Sure anime is storytelling and it does use animation, but simply being a story told through animation doesn't make something anime. If that were the case Ren & Stimpy would be anime.

Hmm...You do realize what forum this is on....that's right, a forum for an online card game that's comparable to Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering. You can't really ban anime avatars from a place like this. (By the way, not trying to insult anyone.) Most of the people who will even consider playing EtG, let alone coming to the forum for EtG, will not be in any way offended by the anime avatars used here. Quite the opposite, a very large portion of the people who are members here LIKE anime...so if you're trolling, then you've done a heck of a good job. If you're serious...I must say in the nicest way possible to get over this problem of yours, don't look at avatars, or don't come to the forum...Just sayin'.

Yu-Gi-Oh and Magic: The Gathering.
M:tG has nothing to do with anime. Yu-Gi-Oh the card game is a card game that shares fans with the anime but also has many players who don't watch the anime. Some people who use this forum also watch porn, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't censor porn on the forum.
