Why woulld I do the top 50 instead of AI3?

Win more electrum per game and more of a challenge.

Since the electrum is too small to be worth the increased rate of losses and challenge is what PvP is for.  I guess that means there isn't any.

The electrum gain is a lot higher due to the fact that you can sell rares once you have more than 6 of them. You can make about as much in T50 as with FG's, and much more score to boot.

electrum and rares are probably the main reasons you want to vs Top50 over ai3

Here's how I look at it:

Opponent	Electrum Gained	Score Gained	Wins Gained
Level 3	Decent	High amounts using an EM deck	Very high with a good deck.
T50	Varyingly High, but no Upped.	A good amount, especially if you manage to face a lot of farms.	Decent, but varies.
FG	Varyingly High, plus Upped which give a very good amount of electrum.	Barely. If you go into positive, it's still a crawl.	50% wins-loss, depending on deck.

In conclusion: T50 is a way to farm electrum and score at the same time, and, if you don't have 6/12 of each already, you get rares as a nice nice bonus.

AI5 is very much useless to grind against, at this point.  You make more Electrum grinding AI3 and gain more rares against AI4.

^this. Back in the day, when I used a control-bow, I farmed Level 5's. I actually got more money and score off using the control-bow on Level 3.

Another good reason to face top 50 is that it's the easiest way to gain Shards.
