Fun. A Minor Phoenix obviously has less attack, and therefore cost upped, but does the Sage necessarily have to have less attack? Is the Phoenix logic the same reason you did this? You say that it becomes the creature's new ability. Does this mean it overwrites things like "Lobotomize" and "Divine Shield"?

Yes, the upgrade is intentionally similar to Phoenix - the idea is to make Sage more rush-like/quicker to deploy, similar to Minor Phoenix.

I think it should only target creatures that already have an ability, imagine a field full of phoenixes, but with different images and more powerful.

You have to kill a creature that has been given Burning Incense first to turn it to Ash, and then it needs another full turn to become a (normal) Phoenix. Even if your opponent plans to kill all your creatures, it takes time to fully protect everything and the Magus himself is very easily to kill.

Faster decks would stick with Phoenix for the ability to Immolate them faster or just have the rebirth ability on play - a rush deck that tries to incorporate this will have to spend quanta every turn to Incense a creature played, which may not even do anything if your opponent uses something like Freeze or Lobotomizer instead.

This gives fire lobotomization capabilities (like liquid shadow)... not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing. On the flip side there is the inherent double edge sword of potentially giving them a pheonix... this of course assumes they have fire quanta... otherwise their field gets clogged by useless ash creatures...
 I see an interesting trio potential with otyugh and boneyard... that may or may not be balanced (I don't have the wherewithal to do the math at the moment)

I can't be the only one thinking this, but what happens if you use Sage on Ash and it dies? Will it turn into Ash which then you'll Rebirth into Ash which then you'll rebirth into a Phoenix? Just curious :V

Interesting point... don't think it heavily affects balance, but that would be an amusing side effect.

Yes, an Ash w/Burning Incense would turn into an Ash, because your Ash now has Phoenix's ability rather than its own ability.
