Agreed. Although I would assume that perhaps when a wave does occur, the middle row simply finishes faster (in terms of the 'wave), meaning that once you play Lava, on the 8th turn or so, the edges/corners of the top/bottom rows still have the Lava effect going on at the same time, while the middle-row is completely clear.

I saw several possible meanings behind "column," and was unable to use this card in the trainer to test. 

But you picked one for me, so it's all better now.

Then people will complain that puffer fishes swim, frogs swim, octopi swim etc. I think Non-airborne sounds right even if you think it sounds forced because it's very simple what it means.
