Yes, this is not true balance, but for the sake of a card idea, here it is.  So, a Photon [1|1] will now cost 1 :light and a Steam Machine [0|6] will cost 2 :water.

This is negated completely by Sanctuary.

1. I'm not sure why this would be negated by sanctuary. Can you elaborate? All that Sanctuaries text says is that your hand and quanta pool cannot be altered. This card doesn't alter either.
2. Why the sum of attack and ability? Isn't having to pay to use the ability cost enough? Why not the sum of attack and HP, or just one or the other?

1. My thought was that it affects the card costs in the hand, because it increases their costs.  There is no point in modifying the card cost AFTER it has been played.

2. That's the point.  The original cards are already balanced according to their ability and its usage.  This modifies it to an extent, making it harder for the opponent to play creatures [5 :fire Lava Destroyer [7|1] ( :earth Growth) -> 8 :fire Lava Destroyer [7|1] :earth Growth] and easier for some other creatures to be played easily [4 :water Steam Machine [0|6] ( :fire :fire Steam) -> 2 :water Steam Machine [0|6] ( :fire :fire Steam)].

And why not just the sum of the stats?  Because that severely hinders some already underpowered cards, like Anubis.

The only problem I have is that I can think of no instances in which this card would DECREASE costs, except for steam machine. It'd be more versatile, and as is the only way  I can see this card ever being used with decrease being the point is in some sort of  :time :water duo with Guru's and steam machines...Actually no, that wouldn't work either. The 2  :water decrease isn't enough to warrant it.

So....Mono time maybe? Rush creatures out with precogs/dials/hourglasses, then once you've summoned what you need, throw a guru down to slow down the enemy?

Mitosis uses the cost of the card. Idea Guru changes the cost of the card. Mitosis is affected.


This is a very good simple approximation of creature balance. I like it.
