Also there aren't ranged creatures in oetg-v, so if this bug _did_ exist it'd only be relevant to flown EEs or saders.

Quite some time ago. I forget the exact patch number...
But yes, ranged creatures in open EtG, ranged creatures and weapons ignore damage and status effect mechanics from shields.
It makes a nice distinction from flying.
