Unupgraded, it really is a question of speed vs. stability. I found that, with my playstyle (drop Sundials early for card drawing power, rather than keeping them for later to ward off big attacks -- and I have only 2 Bone Walls and 1 Phase Shield for other defense), the towers were a better choice. As much as I loved the idea of getting stuff out a turn or two early, I just couldn't take the risk of not getting enough towers to start putting out Otys and Elves for control ASAP. A Nova or two is good for making SOMETHING happen early, but the cards are
just expensive enough to need some quanta from towers regardless, and when you only have 3 towers in play on turn 8, you're not going to get the right quanta to match what's in your hand consistently.
But again, that's with my peculiar playstyle. Someone who was more inclined to wait out those early turns and save their Sundials for later wouldn't need so desperately to get their control cards down RIGHT NOW, and so they (counterinuitively) could make more use of the broad range of quanta that the Novas provide.
Upgraded, Supernovas are simply the shiznit.
