Just some common functions in IRC that I'd really appreciate seeing in our chat applet.

Action. Basically, the /me command. For those not familiar with it: It turns '/me runs around' into *vrt runs around in the actual output. Simple, clean, and a nice way of sorting through people's pretend barfights.
Public moderation. As an example, you'd see the message vrt has been kicked by Xenocidius. Reason: Stop bothering me with ideas for the chat. Not only does it make moderation more transparent, it gives everyone a good idea of where the line is and how not to cross it.
Tabcomplete. I'd start typing 'Xe', hit my Tab button, and it'd complete it to 'Xenocidius'. Simple, handy.
Tabs. Very low on my (personal) priority list, but a tab for PM's rather than a popup window would be appreciated.
Away. A simple '/away message' and /back command would be quite a bit more effective than the current system, especially if it'd send a private notice in case of a highlight.

Now, there's a million more small things IRC has (scripts, independence, fully customisable UI), but these are the main ones that I could realistically see implemented in our chat. Just throwing it out there. :x

Once shall be the number thou shalt bump, and the number of the bumping shall be one.

Also - support for /me, public moderation, tabs, and away functions.
