Upcoming Chat upgrade https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=23632.msg301337#msg301337

If everything goes well, we should be getting the much anticipated new version of our chat room. I'm excited about it because it has many cool features we can use, plus many bugs will be fixed.

NEW CHAT SOFTWARE - FEATURES
(taken from the developers website)

01. Quick start
Welcome to our chat! Here you can find some information that will help you become familiar with the features that our chat offers. Please keep in mind that depending on the settings set by the administrator of this chat the information below might not be 100% accurate.

02. Chat rooms
There are multiple chat rooms. To change the chat room click on ROOMS at the top of the chat window and then click the one you would like to chat in. The number of users chatting in each room can be found next to the name of the room. (rooms can be made password protected)

03. Panels » Settings
You can easily alter the settings of the chat - click on PANELS at the top of the chat window. Select your preferred language, timezone, time format, sound alerts etc.

04. Panels » Profile
You are welcome to submit some details about you that are visible in chat: location, age, gender and website if you have one. You are also welcome to select an avatar image by choosing one from our list or by uploading a photo or another image. If you upload a photo it must not exceed 200kB and the picture file will be checked for validity. Your email address is not displayed in chat. In case you are a guest user and you want to save your profile, you have to enter a valid email address.

05. Panels » My Files
To upload a file or a picture use the buttons at the top-right corner of the panel MY FILES. Snippets are predefined pieces of text or URLs that can be inserted into your chat messages. To set a new snippet (plain text, YouTube URL, place on the map etc) use the SNIPPET option. Your files and snippets are accessible with the button MY FILES in the bottom-left corner of the chat window. (you can upload your favorite decks as images, and unload them in the chat when needed)

06. Private chat, whispering
Our chat allows you to send quick hidden messages to particular chatters, this is so-called whispering. Click on a username from the online list, type the message in the provided box and press ENTER. Additionally you can invite the chatter to start a private conversation with you by clicking on the PRIVATE CHAT link.

07. Ignoring other users
To ignore messages submitted by a particular chatter, click on his/her name from the online list and then click Ignore. Messages from ignored chatters are still visible in history.

08. Youtube & Metacafe videos
Our chat is able to play videos which means that you can share, watch and comment your favorite YouTube & Metacafe videos directly in chat! URLs can be copied from the address bar of your browser. It is necessary to put your video URL between video tags:

09. Maps & search snippets
Our chat allows you to display locations on a map provided by Google Maps. Simply post the location between map tags: [map]Eiffel Tower, Paris, France[/map]. Another useful option is to display a link to Google search results by closing your search query in Google tags: [google]Eiffel Tower[/google].

10. Permissions in chat
Each chatter is a member of a chat group, and each group has different permissions. It is very likely that you do not have access to all the features, for example, you might be unable to whisper, upload files etc.

11. Tons of bug fixed.
Chat freezing bug has been fixed.

>> Link to an example of the full version of the chat << (http://hot-things.net/b5/blab.php)
Note: this version has not been customized visually, so it looks pretty ugly. The features are there however, so feel free to try them out.

>> Link to an example of the LITE version of the chat << (http://elementschat.co.cc/beta/blab.php)
Note: this version has been customized a bit, so it looks a lot more like what our chat will look like. But because it's a lite version, it's missing tons of features.

5.X versions of our chat software are finally here! You can find more information here: http://hot-things.net/blab-ajax-php-chat

I'm still a bit torn on which version to get. Enterprise version has two cool features that would be nice to have: ignoring function and private chatrooms. However it's also way more expensive (35€ vs. 75€) and I'm not sure if those two are enough to warrant the extra prize. Although more features is always nice, even the standard version would be a huge step up from the one we currently have.

I asked the developer whether or not it is possible to first get the standard version and then later upgrade to enterprise and only pay the difference, not the full amount. This way we could first start with the standard version and later decide what to do. We'll see what he says.

I'd go for the 75€ one. It's got the lifetime license.

I'm assuming it's 75 per month/year, which is pretty damn expensive in my opinion. O_o The money adds up, and personally, I think that if you have to pay for the chat continually, the standard update will be sufficient for the majority of the users, even if the ignore/private chat room options won't be available (there are other chatrooms for other users to enter in if they want to talk to others in private...). Considering this is coming out of your paycheck SG, I don't want you to spend excess money on two features that may not even be necessary given the chat mods and alternative chat systems available to users. ^^;

Luckily it's a one time deal. Well, almost. Standard version is for 5.X with free updates but does not include 6.0 (if that ever comes out). Enterprise version is a "lifetime" licence so we would get a new version for free when or if it comes out.

We are only talking about a price difference of about $60, so it's not that big of a deal really. But then again, there might be better ways to spend that $60, like donate them to Elements and using that code as the prize for War #4 betting or something.

Like I said, we'll see what the developer says about upgrading from standard to enterprise and go from there. If we don't lose money upgrading the thing, then getting the standard first would definitely make most sense.

If we can't upgrade later but have to choose now, what about asking the community if they'd want to buy the enterprise version? Just let ppl donate through paypal and see if chat users care enough to contribute and pay for it?
