No. Sometimes chat is going strong at 10 messages in a minute, and with all those close messages together you might be confused as to who exactly said what. We've all mispinged someone, so I'd say this is very plausible.

I liken people's colors on chat to be a quick profile. Similar to how you can follow a conversation simply from the voices. I believe we'd lose a lot if we took that away. Colored names offer a nice touch for customization, but I think it's good to reserve that for admins as is.

IMHO it can go either way (Depends on the client/settings you're using and what you're used to), and some people customize their IRC clients to have colored text anyway (that, or certain chat clients, like Mibbit, allow for the use of color text). This is why I'm in favor of having both as settings in Panels if possible.

Update to say that I agree that having this as an optional setting would be ideal. I don't care what the default is.

I figure my vote won't carry too much weight, but I agree with what majofa said, have colored text be default and colored names an option... If saying yes or no was a requirement, I'd say no.

I'm quite fond of the colored text, and much prefer it to colored names.  Purely aesthetic reasons, though - I think functionality is comparable.
