Been meaning to do a writeup on this deck for a while now. Finally got around to it.
Primarily designed as a stallbreaker, but also very capable of holding its own against rush/control decks, SoPa Dolls utilizes a very interesting synergy between Voodoo Doll and Shard of Patience. While Voodoo Doll has value in itself as a very durable 2-cost creature for Shard of Patience growth fodder, the card's real strength lies in its passive ability.
Since the delay created by Shard of Patience each turn is technically treated as a 1-turn stun, the Voodoo passive mirrors this effect onto the enemy's weapon, completely disabling the opponent's weapon slot while Voodoo Doll and Shard of Patience are both on the field. This brutal weapon-stun allowed SoPa Dolls to defeat several legendary War decks such as
Time's Ghostal,
Aether's PU Grabbow, and the star of War #8,
Jonnington McFirestall!
I stumbled across the combination as part of a very clunky Trials deck back in June 2015, with a single Voodoo Doll added into a Patient Vampires deck. Once I got the combination out during that Trials match, I started playing around with the synergy some more in casual PvP.
Once it was announced that shards would be allowed in War #9, I started developing the idea further, dropping the Vampires in favour of more board control, focusing on Squids instead. It wasn't until my team and I entered the competitive environment of War that we were able to gradually refine it over the course of the event.
Version History
While very strong against a large variety of decks, SoPa Dolls falls to heavy denial, and early creature control.
Discord isn't an issue if you can get your Doll/Shard combo out early, but Earthquakes give Squids a hard time.
Lobotomizer, Eternity and Owl's Eye are no problem to an early Doll combo, but Squids dying early to Lightnings, Shockwaves or other lethal spells can really hurt the deck's defense against fast rushes.
Credit goes to Calindu, trashduke, Aves, chrispybacon84 and RapidStar_ for the extensive testing and fine-tuning done over the course of War #9.
