Otyugh, Bigmouth. Big enough? https://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php?topic=26652.msg338707#msg338707
« on: May 22, 2011, 08:30:06 pm »
Brainstorming to myself off to one side as I often do when there's nothing to do I started thinking about the Otyugh.

The question I am wondering about semi-humourously is:

How big is its mouth?

Seeing that the Otyugh is not airborne I am left to assume that the range of oral reach cannot be infinite for this toughy (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,2063.msg37782#msg37782). This brings up another interesting question:

Should it be allowed to reach airborne creatures?

If it reduced its omnivorous capabilities, then would this mean that a balancing buff could apply? Perhaps it could receive +2 | +1 per creature it consumes, leaving initial playing cost and activated skill cost untouched to leave us with this result:

OtyughElite Otyugh
4 :gravity5 :gravity
0 | 3 0 | 5
:gravity : Devour
Swallow a smaller (less HP's), accesible creature and gain +2 | +1
:gravity : Devour
Swallow a smaller (less HP's), accesible creature and gain +2 | +1

While I realized I may be a it biased, the Otyugh has always been seen as the bane of many decks, even with recent nerfs.

Would this make sense? Should it translate to all Devour activated skills? If so, Scarabs being airborne should be allowed to eat airborne creatures and terrestrial ones, while the Otyugh is stranded on land.

Discuss. ^_^

if it can't reach airborne, it needs even more buff than that...
it's already under-powered... and making airborne immune is not going to increase its popularity

presumably, otyugh uses extreme gravity to suck airborne creatures into its ginormous mouth.  om nom nom.  no change needed

I think the card is fine as it is, ATM - it's sort of like how Giant Frogs can't survive flooding not due to thematics but due to mechanics. Maybe it has a really long tongue to reach Airborne creatures?

Already underpowered? You're kidding right?

And that would enough of a buff to balance it, because only around half the creatures in the game are airborne.

I always pictured the Otyugh using its long tongue to grab its food and bring it to its mouth, sorta like the L4D Smoker or Yoshi. In any case, I think that this card is fine and such a change isn't really needed.

the unupped version is crazily under-powered
look at team gravity's record, this war, and previous wars, otyugh is like useless
even the upped one is too slow most of the time to be useful

Okay, let me make one thing very clear - how OP or UP a card is does not determine war performance - poor leadership, lack of teamwork, and inactivity are the only reasons any team would fail as horribly as Team :gravity has this war.

A card does not need to be fast to be powerful.

Let's avoid anymore discussion of Gravity's effort in War. Thank you.

I see there's quite a few people saying it's good the way it is. Maybe its more of a question if the community would like EtG to be more thematic as opposed to simplistic. Frogs shouldn't drown. Tongues are not infinite.

I would suspect the  :gravity used creates a focused amplification of Otyugh's gravitational force (already proportional to the mass or hp).
Aka: The  :gravity is used in making a tractor beam.

From a balance point of view:
Otyugh was one of the early cards that defined what balanced would mean for the game. It set the standard for the CC vs C balance that has been maintained since. It is balanced.

again, in previous wars, otyugh didn't do much good for :gravity either...

even though, it's not too good in PvP, I do agree it's good as it is

I like the idea of tractor beam though - it gives some imagination to how an Elemental possibly helps their creatures. ;)
