I'm bored. How would a series of cursed swords be? They would be efficient cards, but each would have some sort of drawback impeding their full potential. The ones with better abilities would often have less offense. Ideas/feedback?

:aether Caladbolg, ???

:air Naegling, both player's shields are ignored

:darkness Dainslef, pay hp to deal damage

:death Gram, owner gains 1 poison counter per turn

:earth Durendal, gains 1 atk for each point of damage blocked. Reset per turn

:entropy Hrunting, occasionally fail to deal damage

:fire Laevateinn destroy one of your own permanents per turn

:gravity Damocles, gain attack each turn but does not attack. Pay quanta to deal all built up damage and reset

:life Kusanagi, absorb :life per turn

:light Excalibur, disappears after 2|3 turns. Pay 1 :water to return to deck

:time Joyeuse, delay deck to deal more damage

:water add +1 purify counter to opponent per hit

For Excalibur: I really like that it has :light/:water synergy, but doesn't the ability somewhat require a graveyard? Or do you only use it before it disappears?
It is the greatest mystery of all...

It disappears in 2|3 turns. During this time, you can use its ability. Using its ability removes the card from play, and places an Excalibur at the top card of your deck. If you don't use the ability, it just disappears like phase shield.

These sound cool. :)

Maybe for the others:

:aether : Discharge: Half the damage dealt is dealt as spell damage to you.
:air : May scramble your quanta. (wind blowing)
:fire : Deals 1 damage to one of your creatures each turn.
:water : May freeze the opponent's weapon and itself.
 :water : May purify opponent.

Just suggestions, I look forward to you making more of this!

Maybe for  :aether it could be that it creates a copy of itself as a creature (but then the stats would have to be low ofc)

BTW, Why are Excalibur and Durendal 'cursed swords'?

Not really "cursed" in that sense, but cursed in the sense that they're mechanically good, but come with a downside. If I do make these card ideas, I'll include some lore and why I think they fit the element and why they have what mechanics they do. Changed Naegling into a shield ignorer for both players, and Joyeuse into a weapon that can delay the user's deck for more damage. Still need an effect for :aether or a name for :water. Other than that, how do these look? Balanced? Interesting? Need improvement?

 :aether enemy creatures become immortal?

Or maybe even your creatures become un-immortal (though that would be extremely situational.)

"The meaning of the name Caladbolg is "Hard-Lightning" or "Lightning-Shard" calad-hard, bolg-lightning. The sword is said to have been able to cut an entire hill in half with one fell swoop. It was an Irish sword that was believed to be similar to King Arthur's Excalabar"

Perhaps have Caladbolg destroy one of your own pillars or pends as its curse?

That is exactly why Aether gets Caladbolg :D

Destroying own permanents fell under  Laevateinn's theme of destruction. Although, comparing that to Kusanagi, it seems I either need to nerf Kusanagi (make it drain more :life per turn) or buff Laevateinn.

The best cursed item is one where an inventive player can use the curse to their advantage.

When designing the first of these swords, I tried to think of combos players can use to take advantage of it. Some of the later swords were just used to fit into the theme of "cursed".

Naegling can be used to sacrifice :air's defensive shields for more damage done, as well as PC.

Dainslef synergizes with vampire and nightmare, the healing aspects of :darkness.

Gram synergizes with purify, and provides an option for a faster rush weapon for :death. Arsenic takes a few turns to build up damage.

Durendal is designed to deal damage while being defensive. :earth is about defense.

Hrunting is just random.

Laevateinn with EA

Domacles for gravity stalls. Gravity is quite a good element for stalling, but doesn't have much offense. Also combos with EA.

Kusanagi just eats up :life and deals damage. It should be an offensive weapon for life that perhaps fits a midrange hitter role that gets less effective as the game goes on.

Excalibur's temporary stay can be lengthened with purify to stop deckout or just renew the card. Crusaders can endow the sword during the turns before it disappears.

Joyeuse delays the user's deck, but most :time users have precogs or HG

Most of the "bad" effects will be lobotomizable.
