This wastes a slot in the card pool.

Additionally it should be noted that the crucible requires cards follow an  "a|A" format per thread

This third variation might be worthwhile.

Third variation in question bares similarities to something I suggested here (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,19086.msg262392#msg262392).

While it's true that varying upgrades for one card or one set upgrade for several cards could potentially waste space in the card pool, analysis of the code has shown that there is room for at least 900 'extra' cards such as Holy Cow and such cards do have the potential to add flavor to the game if justified thematically. It's not necessarily the most immediate idea to implement per se, but it is an interesting one to design around.

Not what I meant by waste.
I meant adding 2 full cards is better than adding 1.5 cards because it is 0.5 more cards.
