I've never gotten anything past Smithy but I think its more because I don't ever have art. I think in general my ideas stand well enough on their own even when trying something new.
If you really believe it is your art and that your mechanics themselves are good :S its an even bigger problem than originally; people voting based on whats prettier.

That's a step worse than voting based on familiarity.

Nay, its just that I never have art at all so I'm never even up for voting. I think what most people vote on is new twists on old themes though.

Good news.
Dimensional Striker | Elite Dimensional Striker (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,18641.0.html) has a new ability, although simply worded, and is doing very well in the Aether Crucible. (tied with the 2 others that the would be Aether masters liked)

So it seems that new concepts have a harder time but if they fill a popularly desired role then they can overcome the disadvantage.

Very good news! The ambush series was a prime example of what I mean and I was afraid it would struggle just as much.  I voted for it a while back but hadn't checked recently ^_^

I've been routinely voting up the Ambush series. I'd like to see either the Wyrm or Alligator get pushed thru, but I'd settle for any of the above. I know there's a bit of a weird feeling in the air right now re: new mechanics, but I personally feel Ambush is a good example of an easily implemented ability.

True but the idea is to show Zanz the idea and that people like the idea. I think he will recognize that more ambushers are better and add ~3 ambushers of his choosing assuming he adds the idea at all. However the ambushers are designed to work alone or together.
