Illusions will only work if it would fool the perfectly observant and knowledgeable player.

How about something like this?
Orb of Illusion:
"Create 3 illusions of target ally. Target and all its illusions shuffle positions after each attack or ability use."

A mechanic like the one above will thwart even a highly observant player since the real copy keeps switching places with its doubles.
