Sorry, I meant "random forum user.".
Said random forum user actually posted the idea about 40 pages or so back. I just compressed most of the designs and the names into 3 PseudoElements. (Which I might even make cards for if I can find some ideas.)

Heh, someone got to this idea again before I could. I like the small change of random generation of 2 quanta, to balance it between the two 'versions' of pillars in this game.

Plus, you could always just do it the half-blood way...Chronumbraquagravitas Pillar :>
lol.

On a more serious note:
Generally the problem with any idea based on fusing 3 or more elements into a series of things such as pillars with no limits - there are way too many combinations to cover if you plan to cover them all. I'd rather have three pillars than 64, and so would Zanz.

A similar idea involving multielement pillars can also be found here : The Quantum Forge (http://elementscommunity.org/forum/index.php/topic,26938.0.html).

bah you beat me to it, ive been working on something similar, but ran into a problem with not wanting to make fire stall/rush more powerful by having  :fire :earth on the same card and couldnt think of a better way to group them.

What is the mechanical reason for these sets of 4 instead of other sets? (This question has plagued all these types of cards since they were first suggested by Kael Hate)

Sidenote: The terms Material, Spiritual and Cardinal were coined by Bloodshadow a long time ago. They are being used correctly here.
Well, in traditional fantasy/mythology, earth/air/fire/water are usually the four 'elements', so it makes sense to have them on one.  (earth/air being opposites and fire/water)  Life/Death and Light/Darkness also make sense as opposing pairs.  For the other four, I'm not sure which are supposed to be the opposites of the other, but probably time/entropy and aether/gravity, and in any event, they're the last 4 left :p  Life/death/light/dark are also things that, while not actual physical things you can point to, are somewhat thematically related, and you could look at time/entropy/aether/gravity as also being related thematically.  (at least in my head they are, and making those 3 groups of 4 makes sense in my head)

Good try. However you misread. I asked for a mechanical reason not a thematic reason. I am glad you understand the thematic reason though.

Anyone else want to try to answer the question? I will even accept answers for other divisions provided the answers are good mechanical reasons.

More meta than mechanical - as I stated above, divisions and limits are needed otherwise Zanz would be theorectically forced to implement a ridiculously large amount of pillars ingame.

For mechanical (again somewhat meta) justifications:

:fire :earth :air :water - Almost all of these elements interact with each other or have innate synergy in some way. Lava Golem, Steam Machine, Shockwave, Trident, Puffer Fish, Unstable Gas, etc... are some examples.
:life :death :darkness :light - 3 out of the 4 elements have a healing mechanic - the one that doesn't focuses on slowly picking off the opponent.  When done right this can lead to some powerful stalls. Again, good combinations are common among these elements, though unlike the Material Elements they show through 2 card combinations (Crusader + Weapon, Thorn Carapace + Boneyard/Soul Catcher, Deathstalker + Eclipse).
:aether :gravity :entropy :time - Similar to Spiritual elements has a lot of innate synergy between elements, though combos here are often more direct and/or become the focus of an entire deck or are a useful but somewhat situational niche (Fractal GotP/Charger for good midrange power, BH/Discord, Older FG farmers that relied on Anubis, Momentum + Quintessence, Supernova + RT/Lightning/Momentum, etc...)

Very good reasons ZBlader. They are mostly mechanical in nature though it was mostly meta justification for the Cardinal set. The justification for the Material is by far the strongest.

To be fair it should be noted that all elements have synergies with each other especially when 3-4 elements are grouped. So the argument is not that this is the correct sets but rather the claim that these are sufficiently high quality sets for both the thematic and mechanical reasons.

I am convinced.

Yeah, very good concept, that one too.
