Would it be more or less thematic if, instead of a set upkeep, the upkeep would be X :time, where X = the current damage reduction.
Is this change preferred to the current?

I was suggesting a total buff. A starting DR of 0 would necessitate 3 uses per turn which is not as aesthetically pleasing as matching SoR's 2 uses.

I think the shield should have a base DR of 1, or it's useless unless you have lots of quanta to spare.  A shield is not a shied if it does nothing at its simplest form.  I also think to maintain a DR of 4, a higher cost should be paid than to keep it at 2 or 3.  Here is my idea for a modification and I also checked if it fits on the card.

Reduce damage by X+1.  X decreases by 1 each turn.
 :time :time :time :time :time  : Increase X by 2.  X can't be more than 3.

This would keep you from having to use it twice, which mechanically I don't like, but it would make you pay the cost of increasing it by 2 in order to maintain the 4 DR.

A bit expensive, but i believe that is not a bad card. Normal shields don't give you 4 DR

DR decreases by 1 per turn.
Min DR: 1
Max DR: 4
Thus
Maintaining DR 4 costs 7|6 :time + 2 :time per turn.
Alternating DR 3 and 4 costs 5|4 :time + 1 :time per turn.

I suppose it's still plenty thematic to start winding at 1. (or treat 1 as ).
If 2 :time is worth an increase of 2 then I'll go with 1:time being worth an increase of one. They both can end up the same, but multiple uses is more equally thematic, which i'm inclined to go with.
Or, if it's better to have a higher cost for higher DR, it could be X: Increase DR by 1, Where X is the current DR. Thus maintaining DR 4 would be Casting Cost + :time + :time :time:time :time :time:time :time :time Onward, in other words, Casting Cost + 6 :time + 3 :time per turn to get to and maintain 4 DR. While maintaining 3 DR would be Casting Cost + 3 :time + 2 :time per turn

Since you want multiple (2) uses per turn, I think this version was the best suited.

Approximating a True Casting Cost of 1 :time/4 :time/7 :time with upkeep of 1 :time is my theory for balanced upkeep alternate cost for DRs 2/3/4.

The 2 per turn model reaches 4 :time/5 :time/7 :time true casting cost for DRs 2/3/4. The larger jump between DRs 3 and 4 was intentional. A 3 per turn model would have a minimum DR of 0.

Approximating true casting cost of 3 per turn model (- the casting cost) +2/+3/+5.

Casting Cost: 2 :time|1 :time
Activation Cost: 1 :time (3 uses per turn)
Minimum DR: 0
Maximum DR: 4

Reflection:
The only change between the two models is the DR 1 usage is changed from 3 :time to 3 :time + 1 :time per turn. DR 1 is slightly UP at 3 :time. No reason to increase that cost.
