So If a player is playing ghostmare and his/her opponent plays janus and proceeds to use CC to destroy the ghosts, then the person playing ghostmare loses 10 life everytime his/her ghosts are killed?

It's "in addition to." It's not your fault, the wording of the effect isn't perfect.
