I just kept thinking that there should be an easier [opposed to UG] and more reliable [opposed to Pandemonium]  way to deal mass damage to your side.  Nova is for slight thematics and to justify a 'higher' cost.

[Thunderstorm cost 2 :air and only one side.  Affecting own side means at least -2 to cost (see Firestorm and Pandemonium].  Off element quanta generation for a +1]

I like that it's a card with which you can damage your own creatures. I'm not sure exactly why plasma bursting has the same effect as a nova (thematically). But I am interested in the new decks that would be made based on this card, and how useful it would actually be, depending on if it's being used for the nova part, thunderstorm, or both.

I was thinking of a star making the burst.  A psuedo-nova, per se.  The science doesn't really line up that well, but I figured :aether could use a bit of help with Mindgate.

Seeing a Nova-like card is actually pretty interesting.  It also is pretty good considering it has a drawback, which would means it would be a risk to use this as a source after having 6 Nova.  Not sure about balance, but you are going about it the right way to make it different from similar effects.

The upped one is too abuse-able with unupped novas... Grabbows are even more buffed now.

PVE shouldn't be all about copying a deck code and converting time into electrum, score, and potentially rares.
If the only way to derive fun from a game is its PVP content, then non-hardcore players a.k.a. the mass are alienated from the hardcore community.

AoE damage increases cost exponentially not linearly (Compare an Abomination to an Emerald Dragon vs. Thunderstorm compared to Rain of Fire). You'd have to increase the upped cost to something like 3-4 :aether , IMHO.

Even when upgrading?
Yes. (upped thunderstorm is 1 for 1 while upped RoF is 3 for 5). I'm guessing damaging your own creatures offsets things slightly so I think 3 :aether is the most reasonable cost. (2 :aether still brings Supernova to mind)
