means Darkness quanta, and not the element of Darkness itself - the two should not be used interchangeably.
I imagine that because of the reliance on its Phylactery, the (Greater) Lich would serve well in Mono-darkness decks that also use Cloak (nice way to indirectly 'buff' that card as well
). It's a pretty decent card for its cost and seems to have good potential, especially if you have some back-counters; for example, if the opponent simply explodes the Phylactery, you can cast spells such as Blessing or Chaos Power to get it to its original (or even better) stats, or rewind the Lich and then replay it (giving it back its original immortality with the Phylactery out again).
...I personally wonder if a single Phylactery should be able to immortalize all Liches on the field...
