Actually, there is a lot of mythology centered around strange events occurring in supernatural fog... I think it fits.
It fits the  :air theme since we already have fog shield, and fog is essentially superfine mist.

Here's an interesting news clip involving "Killer Fog" that happend in the 50's in london. This actually did happen, its not a myth. Its one of the major events that lead to many of the pollution control laws we have today:
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=873954

Also, anyone remember the movie: "The Fog" ... although that was the work of things that lurked within

Here I think the card is hinting at things disappearing and then vanishing along with it when the fog dissipates.
Its a cool concept.
I like it myself.

One thing I think would make it more interesting is if it acted on the field slot rather than the creature, and perhaps had a limited duration. Then, any creature that got put in the same field slot would be affected as well. This would fit the environmental like effect, making it more like a real fog or mist

-1|-1 every 2 turns (-0.5|-0.5 every turn) or -2|-1 every 2 turns (-1|-0.5 every turn), both for 4 :air.
Give me a reason not to use Shockwave.

Thats why I say make it a field effect instead. Then anything that goes into the same slot afterwards will suffer the same fate. It becomes a sort of "environmental" hazard that can effect many creatures unlike shockwave that is a 1 time thing.

Field effect? The card type is spell. And spells don't last after played.
And the card says only one creature.
EDIT: owait, yes you said that. I thought you say that "it's a field effect".

Yes, in otherwords, the spell could be made to create a cloud effect on a field slot that makes anything put within fade into nothingness... or die a chocking death... however you want to interpret it.

Okay, I'll make it a field effect  from what I've heard. I'll get on it as soon as I get my comp back.

Any creature in creature slots closest to the center lose 1|1 every other turn.

If I understood this correctly, you may want to try the word "adjacent".

I think this card is UP, since, by its wording, it affects creatures on both sides of the field indiscriminately.

This actually makes a bit more thematic sense.  I still think it's :death , but the argument for :air , in your sense, is a bit stronger.

In my opinion, it should be a permanent, with the card text "Create a mist in the centre of the field, which alternatly makes any creature under it lose 1/1 and drains 1 :death. Attack won't go into negatives." Just my 2 cents.
Here's my reasoning, (sorry it doesn't make much sense). --> The only other field effect (I think) is flooding, which is a permanent and absorbs its element ( :water) each turn. As this only occurs once every 2 turns, maybe the absobing should do the same? Or, as Drake_XIV said, it does fit into death as well, so maybe drain  :death each turn it doesn't affect.

Fitting the drain in there will be a trick... Just not enough room on a card's text field sometimes... *sigh*

The attack dropping below 0 does not have to be added to the card text, it just has to be noted in the notes.  That way you can add more stuff as needed.
