The card is good, but I think it costs too much. The unkeep is sufficient to limit its power.

Is it vital that the card be immaterial?

The card is good, but I think it costs too much. The [upkeep] is sufficient to limit its power.
The card cost is there to prevent it from being played simply to deal a quick ten / twelve damage if you only have a low amount of :darkness.  It wouldn't be very smart to spend 9 :darkness to only deal 12 damage, but if the card only costed 3 :darkness, for example, and that is what you had, you could play it, deal 12 damage, and they both would die.

Anyway, due to the upkeep, you wouldn't be playing it if you didn't have enough :darkness to cover the card cost.  It is more late-game focused, preferably in a deck like Pestal where you have lots of :darkness production and enough creatures to limit CDE.

Is it vital that the card be immaterial?
Yes, otherwise you could potentially kill a full field of CDE's with a single Lightning.  It already has the chance to be destroyed by your quanta pool, we don't need single-target spells to completely obliterate it as well.

I really like this. Perhaps when they die they deal damage to the owner. Juts to make it even harder to control. It's a really fun card idea though.  It would work well with Pests as you have said but it also seems a bit too strong. 5HP is quite a lot in my opinion. Especially since only cards like Firewall can touch them. Maybe a health buff and removing Immaterial status. Like what someone else has said, your cramming quite a bit into one card. That does lead to the problem of buffs though. Like Heavy Armor. I don't know, I do like the card though but it seems like it might have some balance issues.

Maybe if it was a permanent that duplicated... but then again, that's adding a whole new ability on to it...

Very cool card. I think the upped would be fine at 8 :darkness. Since several other cards get an attack increase without cost increase and without ability change, I don't think the +1 attack here is worth +1 cost.
It is the greatest mystery of all...

The difference is that it isn't just +1 damage; it is a potential +23 damage because every CDE will deal one more damage.
