This card seems way overpowered.  Plus, by definition assassins attack high profile targets.  I think an assassin card would be a cool idea for darkness, but not like this.

What if the attack is changed to one that way it'll have to attack 0 attack creatures (devourer and chrysaora are the only ones I can think of) (providing good mono boost) or you could buff it (providing good synergy with other elements) or antimatter (strengthening synergy with entropy)

Yep. So it has synergy with virus, retrovirus, plague, aflatoxin, bloodsucker, liquid shadow, eagle's eye, shockwave, fire lance, ice lance, siphon life, fire storm, pandemonium, thunderstorm and unstable gas (maybe I missed a few).

See, now that's brilliant.

A further thought: since we have the new Steam Machine mechanic, we could do the same for the assassin. +2/0, losing 1 attack per turn until at or below their full attack power.

smug you missed out devour (otyugh and scarabs) but poison counter + reducing attack seems a it UP maybe it loses 1 attack per turn and can go into minuses that way opponent can just wait a while until he plays a creature and the assassin is healing him, maybe have a minimum it can go to though.

I worded it wrong.  I didn't mean that the Assassin should have a poison counter, but that he could only target enemies with a poison counter.  Going from being able to kill anything that has taken some damage to only things that have poison is a big leap, though.  Maybe there is some middle ground.

How about an assassinate ability that works as follows:

When using assassinate, the assassin has an 80% chance to kill target creature, and a 33% chance to die.
Whole different card concept, but it has the feel of chancy dark ops.
